MESSAGE FROM FRED HUDSON, Chair, Albemarle County Democratic Committee
TIME TO VOTE!
The time has finally come for us to make our voices heard in the variety of campaigns that are going full blast! We are less than one week away from the big day, and I am very excited about the progress of the campaigns. So many of you have participated in so many ways. Some have worked for a specific campaign and some have volunteered you time with the County Party. Either way, the mission has been to elect Democrats, and so many of you have generously committed to that result. Thank you or your help, no matter the avenue of your choice. It is not over yet, so please don't stop now! This is the most critical time, and winning is within our grasp.
In very simple terms, in other campaign years, we were working for the general benefit of people in the Commonwealth or the county. But in the election coming up, we are able to focus on those issues that impact on each one of us as we live our daily lives. The Board of Supervisors is currently deadlocked in a 3-3 tie on many issues that have enormous effect on all the citizens in Albemarle County. The tie is essentially a vote for no change. . . regardless of what direction that you might want the County to go. Voters have expressed on many occasions their frustration with the deadlocked Board.
Now is the time to change things. Vote for Ann Mallek and Marcia Joseph and they will work with the other supervisors to provide practical leadership and a balanced approach for the County. With regard to the Constitutional officers that we are electing, your support is no less critical. Larry Claytor (Sheriff), Denise Lunsford (Commonwealth's Attorney), Debra Shipp (Clerk of Court) have worked hard and will carry the "Democratic banner" to their respective positions. People have wondered why we elect those positions, and it is true that they are the least partisan of all elected positions. But having Democrats in those positions will help build the Democratic Party and provide a resource of elected officials, should they aspire to higher office. Their election will also raise the public's attention and awareness of our party.
We need Democrats elected, and we have a great group of people who are ready to "step up" and serve. Thank goodness we have such a distinguished group to represent us. Please support them, and as you would expect, I will even offer a way to do it! One things that we will need to do is turn out every voter that we can for the Democrats on Tuesday. Please vote, and take your friends to the polls with you. I hope you will practice some real "outreach" in the next few days to ensure that all those you know who re Democrats are voting. We all know it is important. . . and we can do something about it!
Thank you for all of the assistance you have given to the candidates and the Party over the last several months. If we can keep the effort strong for only a few more days, we will be celebrating on Tuesday knowing full well that we did everything we could to bring the County into the WINNING column for our candidates.
Good luck to Larry Claytor, Denise Lunsford, Debbie Shipp, Lindsey Dorrier, Ann Mallek, and Marcia Joseph. You are the very best, and we are very proud of you!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteers are needed to make telephone calls from now through November 6. The purpose of the call is to deliver a simple message to be sure and vote. We will use the list that we have created through the ID part of the project to provide lists to the caller. Names and telephone numbers are included. Most importantly, we make these calls from home, so you don’t need to go anywhere or make any special arrangements. You can make the calls on your schedule, in your home. Just let me know of your interest, or call the office at 296 -1865 and offer your help. Again, you set your own schedule, and you call from home. I hope many of you will help as we have a large number of people to call.
WVAX, 1450 ON SATURDAY’S AT 9 AM
Your county party sponsors a program on WVAX, and it is a 30 minute segment where local issues are discussed from the Democratic point of view. The name of the program is “The Albemarle Political Corner”, and I hope you will find the program very exciting. The purpose of the project is to provide still yet another opportunity for the citizens of Albemarle County to be exposed to the Democratic Party. It is a very large “outreach” type of concept that will assist us with increasing the vote, increasing the familiarity with the party, and hopefully continue to bring on new participants. After all, we are a party that should appeal to many, but we always need to be vigilant in our search for methods of spreading the Democratic message. I hope you will make this a regular part of your Saturday mornings. Please tell your friends and relatives. The programming has gone on for two weeks now and the comments have been that the material is
“substantive and informative”. With that kind of feedback, the program will make a difference, and that is the point.
ABSENTEE VOTING
Remember, you can vote absentee as of now! All absentee voting is being done at the new Albemarle County Office Building at 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville. The new telephone number of the Registrar is 434 972 4173, if you have any specific questions. You can vote absentee, in person, up until 5 PM on Saturday, November 3. So please don’t miss your opportunity to vote this year. The races will not be "landslides", and we need every vote possible in order to win. If you cannot be at the polls, no need to worry. You can vote Absentee up until November 3.
