MESSAGE FROM FRED HUDSON, Chair, Albemarle County Democratic Committee

As you would expect, we are in “full swing” with the campaign as I write this, and we have much to be optimistic about. Don’t get me wrong. . . there is much to do, and there is great need for your assistance. Recently, we have had very good participation of party members in the voter ID project. Last weekend may well have set the record for this year with approximately 20 committed people talking to voters. We met a lot of people, and the sense of support for the Democratic candidates was quite strong with the folks we met. Things are looking good for us on November 6, but again, there is much to do.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We have three more weeks of the identification of voters project. After that, we will be shifting to the “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) part of the campaign. Volunteers are needed to make telephone calls from about October 26 through November 6. The purpose of the call is to deliver a simple message to be sure and vote. We will use the list that we have created through the ID part of the project to provide lists to the caller. Names and telephone numbers are included. Most importantly, we make these calls from home, so you don’t need to go anywhere or make any special arrangements. You can make the calls on your schedule, in your home. Just let me know of your interest, or call the office at 296 1865 and offer your help. Again, you set your own schedule, and you call from home. I hope many of you will help as we have a large number of people to call.

As in most elections, the key for the Democrats is voter turnout. Obviously, the reason we ID the voter is to be sure we are getting our folks out to the polls. Then we phone to underline the importance of getting to the polls on Election Day. The “recipe” is that simple, but the best part is that it really works! And we can change the political landscape of Albemarle County by doing the simple things. The County went for Al Weed and Jim Webb last year, and Kaine, Byrne and Creigh Deeds the year before. We are getting consistent, but it takes all of us to do the things we can do. Please help. We need you.

THE CANDIDATES
Our group of candidates this year is working so hard to win the positions that they seek. They have been attending forums, “meet and greets",neighborhood parties, and fundraisers constantly. In the hours between the various meetings, they have been out going door to door meeting the voters. We could not have nominated a group more energetic or determined in their campaigns. I am proud of them all, and I hope you are too. This is totally unnecessary, but just to repeat their names. . . .
LARRY CLAYTOR . . . SHERIFF
DENISE LUNSFORD. . .COMMONWEALTH’S ATTORNEY
DEBBIE SHIPP. . . CLERK OF COURT
LINDSEY DORRIER. . . SUPERVISOR, SCOTTSVILLE
ANN MALLEK. . . SUPERVISOR, WHITE HALL
MARCIA JOSEPH. . . SUPERVISOR, RIVANNA
We nominated them and they responded. Now it is our turn to do one more thing. . .the last thing is to get out the vote, and to vote ourselves!

WVAX, 1450 ON SATURDAY’S AT 9 AM
Your county party started a new project during the month of September. We sponsor a program on WVAX, and it is a 30 minute segment where local issues are discussed from the Democratic point of view. The name of the program is “The Albemarle Political Corner”, and I hope you will find the program very exciting. The purpose of the project is to provide still yet another opportunity for the citizens of Albemarle County to be exposed to the Democratic Party. It is a very large “outreach” type of concept that will assist us with increasing the vote, increasing the familiarity with the party, and hopefully continue to bring on new participants. After all, we are a party that should appeal to many, but we always need to be vigilant in our search for methods of spreading the Democratic message. I hope you will make this a regular part of your Saturday mornings. Please tell your friends and relatives. The programming has gone on for two weeks
now and the comments have been that the material is “substantive and informative”. With that kind of feedback, the program will make a difference, and that is the point.

ABSENTEE VOTING
Remember, you can vote absentee as of now! All absentee voting is being done at the new Albemarle County Office Building at 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville. The new telephone number of the Registrar is 434 972 4173, if you have any specific questions. You can vote absentee, in person, up until 5 PM on Saturday, November 3. So please don’t miss your opportunity to vote this year. The races will not be "landslides", and we need every vote possible in order to win. If you cannot be at the polls, no need to worry. You can vote Absentee up until November 3.

Thank you for your continued support of the Democratic Party. We can make a difference!

Fred
