MESSAGE FROM FRED HUDSON, Chair, Albemarle County Democratic Committee: We have a very exciting month ahead of us and I am hopeful that many of you would like to participate in the process of electing our National Convention delegates. We start that activity almost immediately. The very first step in the selection process of National Convention delegates will occur on Monday, April 21st. On that date, Albemarle County
Democratic Party will hold its caucus. The details are below, and every one of you is certainly encouraged to attend.

The caucus will elect those of you who would like to attend the 5th District Democratic Convention in Lovingston in Nelson County on May 17th and the State Convention in Hampton on June 14. A prefiling form is required to declare you interest in being elected to attend the two conventions. There is a voluntary fee to submit your form of $25.00 which is payable to the Albemarle County Democratic Committee but the proceeds are split between the State Party, the local party and the 5th District to help offset the expenses of the caucuses or conventions.
The Prefiling form is available on the Albemarle County Democratic Committee website (www.albemarledems.org). At the home page, just click on caucus, and then when the page changes, just click on Applications. Print the application, fill it out, and send it to the Albemarle County Democratic Committee, P.O. Box 5698 , Charlottesville , VA 22905 , and hopefully, attach your check. The filing deadline is 5 PM on April 16, so please do not put off the filing of the form. You can fax it to me at 434 964 1292, but if you have trouble with that, just call me at 973 8584 and we will try to fix whatever is the problem.

Albemarle County has been allotted 34 Delegates and 17 Alternates to the 5th Convention and the State Convention. Of the 34 Delegates, 23 will represent Obama and 11 will represent Clinton . Of the Alternates, 12 will represent Obama and 5 will represent Clinton . All those prefiling are eligible to be elected to join the delegation. There are plenty of opportunities to engage in the process and I hope you will sign up quickly.
Tom Perriello will be with us also.
He will have some fine words for us as we prepare to select no only our Presidential candidate but also our 5th Congressional District Democratic Candidate. Tom is a very exciting and different candidate. I know you will want to meet him and get to know about his candidacy.
Not everyone wants to be a delegate to the 5th Convention or the Sate Convention, but you can come to the caucus on Monday, April 21st and participate also. You do not need to file anything prior to the caucus to attend, just come. The caucus will be at the Albemarle County Office Building at 1600 5th Street , Room A, Charlottesville. Registration will begin at 6:30 PM and the Caucus doors will close promptly at 7:30. Please arrive early, as once the doors close, no one can be admitted, and we want all who wish to participate to be able to do so. We will have a Caucus Declaration Form that we require at registration that asks you to agree with certain points. . . like you are a Democrat and a registered voter.
Nothing I am sure any of you would struggle with so please come out participate. It will be a very exciting evening.

At the Fifth District Convention, on May 17th, the actual voting for Delegates to attend the National Convention will begin. The 5th District has a total of four Delegates and one Alternate. As a result of the voting during the primary, the convention will elect 3 delegates pledged to Senator Obama (1 Male and two Females) and 1 delegate pledged to Senator Clinton (1 Male). The Alternate will be pledged to Senator Obama (1Male). The breakdown resulted from the picking of names out of a hat, which was performed by the State Party. While some may not agree with the split of delegates and alternates, the number of delegates is fixed by the results of the primary vote and the gender determination is done by lot. I assure you that every effort has been take to have the results as fair as possible.
The State Convention delegates are the same as those attending the 5th Convention so you will have a lot of party activity if you are selected as an attendee of the 5th Convention.
The State Convention will be held in Hampton on June 14, but more information will be forthcoming on that soon. Being involved in both of the conventions is a very exciting experience, and one that you will not want to miss. It starts with the Albemarle Caucus on April 21. PLEASE COME OUT AND PARTICIPATE. This is the essence of our democracy. . . where private citizens come together to decide who will represent them to select their national leadership. There is no better way to participate in government than this!
Please come out and let your voice be heard. It will be an exciting night, I assure you. I hope to see many of you at the caucus on April 21. It is participation at its best!
Fred
