MESSAGE FROM FRED HUDSON, Chair, Albemarle County Democratic Committee:

The campaigns are really in “high gear” with the Presidential candidate selection process reaching a deafening roar. As you know, Virginia had a terrific primary turnout and Obama carried “the day” in the Commonwealth. Therefore, now we turn our attention to the delegate selection process for the national convention in the Commonwealth. The 5th District was allotted a total of four delegates (two female and two male) and one alternate (male) on the basis of the voting in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 elections. The vote in the primary further determined that Obama would receive the alternate and both women delegates and one male delegate of the allotted delegates. Clinton will receive the one remaining male delegate from the 5th . So now, with the primaries that are occurring this month in other states forming the backdrop, we will prepare to choose the individuals who will represent the 5th Congressional District at the National
Convention. Personal decisions are being made now, and the process of selection will actually begin in April. So make your decision now as to your desire to go to Denver , and then be ready to act in early April.
There will be more on this subject next month.

We have all waited a long time for our opportunity to take back the White House and improve our representation in Congress. We took the first step with the primary voting, and now we move on to getting prepared for the Fall campaign. Getting involved is so very important this year, and we are trying to make it as simple as possible. Please go to the Albemarle County Democratic party website (www.albemarledems.org) and obtain the form to volunteer to help in “turning the Commonwealth blue”. We hope to make it a very dark color of blue this year, but your help is very much needed. There are many different ways to volunteer, but the first thing is to let us know that you are ready to participate. Just get the form back to me, and you will have started the process to join many good Democrats in making the Fall campaign a success.

We have great candidates who will be running for the US Senate and House this year. At this writing, Tom Perriello is the only candidate who has committed to seeking the Democratic nomination for the House from the 5th Congressional District. Mark Warner, our brilliant former governor, has committed to running for the US Senate from the Commonwealth. I do believe that you would never find two finer people to represent the Democratic Party in the upcoming election. Of course, we are still in the process of selecting our nominee for President, so we will all just have to be patient with that process as the primary season grinds on for a few more weeks.

Be sure to save the date of May 17, 2008 , when we will be having the 5th Congressional District Democratic Convention in Lovingston, Nelson County , Virginia . Being a delegate to the 5th District will also cause you to be a delegate to the State Convention, so I hope there will be very good participation from all good Democrats.

As you can see there are some good things coming, and I am excited about this year. I look forward to seeing you soon at one event or another. We had another good year last year, and now we need to start concentrating on being prepared to continue our “winning ways” in Albemarle County ! We can make this a great one!

   Fred
