MESSAGE FROM FRED HUDSON, Chair, Albemarle County Democratic Committee:
The BBQ of a couple of weeks ago was a smashing success, and once again, I would like to thank all of you who helped with the event, and all of those who came. It was a simply perfect day, the food was never better, and the speakers sensational! The response to the Tom Perriello was terrific, and it showed the kind of support and commitment Tom has with the Democrats of Albemarle. He was at his best and the crowd loved it. If you were not there, I hope you will not miss the next BBQ. You just miss so much of the sense of the campaign at that point and you get to know the candidates even better than before. It won’t be long before we have another, and I hope you will make plans to attend when the first notice arrives!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We have only a few more weeks in our project of identifying voters. After that, we will be shifting to the “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) part of the campaign. Volunteers are needed to finish the identification part of the campaign and to make telephone calls. We will use the list that we have created through the ID part of the project to provide the call lists. The lists will have the name as well as the telephone numbers. You can drop by the Coordinated Campaign at 1310 Rio Road East, let me know of your interest, or call the “GOTV HOTLINE” at 434 409 5908 and offer your help. You set your own schedule. I hope many of you will help as we have a large number of people to call.
As in most elections, the key for the Democrats is voter turnout. The reason we ID the voter is to be sure we are getting our folks out to the polls. The reason for the phoning is to underline the importance of getting to the polls on Election Day. The “recipe” is that simple, but the best part is that it really works! We can change the political landscape of Albemarle County by doing the simple things. Albemarle County had a great year in 2007 by winning two constitutional offices (Denise Lunsford, Commonwealth Attorney and Debbie Shipp, Clerk of Court) and two Board of Supervisor contests (Ann Mallek and Lindsey Dorrier). In 2006, the County went for Al Weed and Jim Webb, and Tim Kaine, Leslie Byrne and Creigh Deeds the year before. We are getting consistent, but it takes a lot of people working together to continue the trend and give Tom Perriello, Mark Warner and Barack Obama the votes they need to carry the 5th District and the
Commonwealth. Please help. This is a most important election, and your country needs you, the 5th District needs you and we need you.
The Democratic candidates this year is working so hard to win the positions that they seek. They have been attending debates, forums, “meet and greets”, neighborhood parties, and fundraisers constantly. I am proud of them all, and I hope you are too. The Democratic Party has nominated them, and they have responded in a way that has been a credit to the County, the Commonwealth, and to our Congressional District. They have responded to our confidence and really engaged their opponents in their races. Now we need to give of ourselves and make the phone calls, finish the voter identification, turn out the vote, volunteer on Election Day, and then take a few minutes on November the 4 and VOTE!
ABSENTEE AND EARLY VOTING
Remember, you can vote “early” or absentee as of now! All absentee voting is being done at the new Albemarle County Office Building at 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902. The telephone number of the Registrar is 434 972 4173, if you have any specific questions. You can vote absentee, in person, up until 5 PM on Saturday, November 1. If you know someone who is out of State, they can mail their application now for an absentee ballot to be sent to them. But don’t wait if you are using the mail. Get it done! Your vote is important. Please don’t miss your opportunity to vote this year. If you cannot be at the polls, no need to worry. You can vote Absentee up until November 1.
Thank you so much for your support, and for your help in this most important election. We just have to win the three races, and we can if we all do our part!
Thank you.
Fred
