MESSAGE FROM FRED HUDSON, Chair, Albemarle County Democratic Committee:

The Democratic National Convention just concluded, and I am sure that many of you saw the festivities and the nomination of Barack Obama and Joe Biden as our candidates. What a spectacular event the convention was. Albemarle County was very well represented at the convention as Judy Rasmussen, Becca Slutzky, and I were there as Delegates. Gary Kendall was there as a member of the DNC Rules Committee. From the area, Kristin Szakos of Charlottesville was attending also. Considering that the Virginia delegation had 101 votes at the convention, you can see that our county and area contributed to well to the strength of the Virginia delegation. The sad part is that only a few were delegates could be elected and others would have liked to go also. I hope that any who would like to attend a conventions in the future will make that effort in future years. It is quite an experience and from my personal point of view, I am very grateful to those who
voted at the Fifth District Convention for the opportunity that I received to attend. I know the others who went would join me in that expression of thanks as well.

Now we turn our attention to the voter identification program and the Annual BBQ on September 21. The Annual BBQ is going to be particularly exciting this year. Presidential years are always something to look forward to, and with the excitement of the current campaign, 2008 should be a terrific year and BBQ. As last year, we will be at Ash lawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe, for the event. The grounds are beautiful, and the facility is terrific. I know you will enjoy it. Last year, we had many complements about the facility and I know you will be pleased with the event itself but also with the beauty of the venue. We have a full program, full of exciting presentations, and you will have good visits with old friends, meet new friends, and be thrilled with the speakers. The tickets are $20 now, and they will be $25 at the door. Young people (6-16) are $5.00, and below 6 are free. Not only is the event worth every penny, but we also
have free access to the home of James Monroe. The event is a real family affair, and I hope you will take advantage of every bit of it. We take Visa and MasterCard, so all you have to do is call the “BBQ Hotline” at434 409 5908 and get your ticket without even having to do anything other than making the call and giving your credit card information. Please come. It is our only “fundraiser” for the year and we use the money to support our candidates every year. So your support goes to a very good cause.

The voter identification project goes very well also. Our effort is to identify those voters who are Democrats so that we can see them again by allowing us to establish contact with those voters and keep them involved with the party, the campaigns, and ultimate victories in the Commonwealth, the 5th District, and Albemarle County . The project is a way of actively expressing your support of the candidates and I cannot express to you the importance of the project to the party and the campaigns. All you have to do is ask Denise Lunsford, Debbie Shipp, and Ann Mallek of its importance of the project if you have any questions. Each week, the list of meeting places is published for you assistance so that you can pick a place near you, and spend two hours a week (10 – noon) on a Saturday morning making a large contribution to the success in 2008 and also in the future. I hope you can come out and help.

I look forward to seeing you at the BBQ, or before at the meeting places of the voter identification project. September is a great month for your County Party , and I hope you will take advantage of everything that is happening. We need and look forward to your support, and I cannot thank you enough for all that you are doing. Thank you and we are off to another great year, and now is time to really get active!

Fred
