Dear Hollymead Families:
It is with a sense of profound relief that I confirm that, after a review of
charges by the Commonwealth¹s Attorney, the Albemarle County Police expect
to file charges in the racial vandalism incidents at Hollymead. This also
includes the vandalism that took place on our roof. As you may have heard by
now, there was another incident that took place on the weekend of November
11-12. At the time, Police asked that I not notify our community about this
incident due to their concern about impeding the investigation. The
incidents in September and November are related and suspects are not linked
to Hollymead Elementary School in any way.
These incidents have placed a great deal of stress on all of us associated
with Hollymead. We all take a great deal of pride in our school and the
accomplishments of its students, staff and parents. We are a school that has
always honored the basic values of respect for oneself and others and we
were all deeply hurt by what occurred on our campus.
The incidents, however, did provide an opportunity for the community to come
together and work toward positive solutions in increasing respect for all
individuals. I want to thank the individuals who participated in the two
community forums that have been held and who gave of their time to establish
long term goals and strategies that will assist us in the future. We are all
more aware of how others feel and have grown in our appreciation for the
differences in our school community. Thank you all for your continued
support.
We will continue to make school safety a top priority and continue to
demonstrate caring and consideration toward our students. Hollymead stands
tall as a leader on so many different fronts; I am proud to say that we,
along with Baker-Butler and Sutherland, are also leaders in appreciating
diversity and celebrating how it makes us stronger. Again, I deeply
appreciate the support that we have received from you and your continued
faith in our guidance of your children¹s education. If you have any
questions on this matter, do not hesitate in calling on me.
Sincerely,
Carole A. Hastings, Principal
