Making the Dream a Reality
A Cultural Celebration
Tuesday, January 15, 2008
6 8:30 p.m. At
Sutherland Middle School

Our theme is drawn from Dr. King's notion of the "beloved community" and how
we as citizens can work together‹peacefully, fairly, democratically,
respectfully‹to build and improve the community we share.

All entries should incorporate our theme: ³The ŒU¹ and ŒI¹ of community;
Making the Dream a Reality².

Students should consider the following for their submissions:

ü What makes a community great?
ü In what ways is your community similar to this ideal?
ü How has your community contributed to you?
ü How have you contributed to your community?

Entries may be submitted in three categories, with prizes awarded for each
age group in each contest area. Winners will present and display their
winning entries at the celebration:

Contests are open to Albemarle County Public School students and home school
students living within the boundaries of the Albemarle County Northern
Feeder Pattern. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate these contests into
their classroom activities, as they are an excellent means for studying
King's life and work. All winning entries will be incorporated into the
Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in January. First place entries will be
featured during the program.

The deadline for submitting entries is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2008.
Entries may be hand-delivered or mailed to your school¹s main office or to
the Office of Community Engagement, 401 McIntire Road, Rm. 341,
Charlottesville, VA 22902. Teachers and students interested in
participating can pick up the entry form/contest flyer at their schools.

Our first annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration will be held
on January 21, 2008, honoring Dr. King's legacy of leadership,
humanitarianism, and selfless service.

The event will feature more than 2 hours of music, dance, food and
festivities that celebrate Albemarle County¹s diverse ethnic and cultural
community.
