Extreme Journey Through Hallowed Ground

Rising sixth through eighth grade students are invited to hike, bike, canoe
and pod with historical experts along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, a
175 mile swath of land from Gettysburg, PA to Charlottesville, VA. This
Extreme program introduces participants to Where America Happened as they
study the legacy of leadership provided by men and women along the trail and
the decisions they made that shaped our nation. What hung in the balance as
Thomas Jefferson labored over the text of the Declaration of Independence?
What did George Gilmore gain by staying in the south after the Emancipation
Proclamation? Was Clara Barton out of line on the battlefield? And what if
John Brown had stalled at Harpers Ferry? Students answer these and other
questions as they work with archaeologists, authors, cartographers and
national park service guides at Antietam, Gettysburg, Ash Lawn-Highland,
Montpelier, Harpers Ferry, C&O Canal and Point of Rocks.

In addition to exploring significant people and events at heritage sites,
participants create vodcasts using photographs, video clips and sound bites
gathered during their field experiences. This material along with original
music and literary pieces are combined to create movies that explore the
lessons of leadership learned along this Hallowed Ground.

Visit www.hallowedground.org <http://www.hallowedground.org/> for more
information on the Extreme Journey. Registration opens March 24th for the
Albemarle Extreme session which runs from July 7 July 18. Tuition for
the two week experience is $650.00. Interested participants can also e-mail
questions to education at jthg.org or watch the Extreme Video at
www.hallowedground.org/education!
