TONIGHT: PTO MEETING -- HOW TO SPEND PTO FUNDS

The PTO is seeking suggestions for our 2008-2009 gifting to the
school. With a year of several successful PTO fundraisers, the
Brownsville PTO expects to have approximately $15,000 to give back to
the school to support extra-curricular activities and to purchase
classroom materials and supplies. If anyone has suggestions for this
year's spending, please send your ideas to John Herrmann at herrmannjohn at praintl.com
or provide them to Principal Vining before tonight’s meeting, when
the general goals of our gifting program and individual spending
proposals will be discussed. Those wishing to endorse specific
proposals will be given 5 minutes each to present their suggestions.
Following tonight's meeting, the PTO executive board will prepare a
gifting proposal to be presented to the PTO membership at the May 7
meeting, and voted upon at the June 4 meeting. Please join us
tonight! Babysitting is provided.

2008-09 COUNTY BUDGET TAX RATE ADOPTED

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors adopted, by a 4
(Mallek,Thomas, Slutzky, Rooker) to 2 (Boyd, Dorrier) vote, a 71 cent
real estate property tax rate with the stipulation that one cent of
tax revenues (about $1.6 million) be set aside and only used if
projected revenues are less than budgeted during the next fiscal
year. Any funds not utilized for revenue shortfalls will be returned
to the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) budget at the end of the year.

The County's 2007 tax rate was 68 cents. Thus a 71 cent tax rate
represents a 3 cent increase.

As a result of this action, it is expected that the Albemarle County
School Board's $151.3 million budget request for 2008-09 will be fully
funded. In summary, the School Division will receive additional
revenues based on the reallocation of one penny in capital funds
towards operational expenses, plus the impact of the tax rate being
increased (schools will have access to revenues generated from 2 cents
of tax rate increase, with the third penny being held in the local
government contingency fund).

The School Board will have a budget work session on Thursday, April 17
at 6:30 PM in Lane Auditorium of the Albemarle County Office Building
to finalize its budget. The Board has said previously that it will
continue with some cuts (e.g. central office expenditures) regardless
of the revenues available as part of its implementation of
recommendations in the Resource Utilization Study. Other cuts (e.g.
strings & world languages staffing subsidies) or additions (e.g.
specialty centers) that were identified in various contingency plans
and previously considered by the Board will be on the table for final
review. If you have a particular item that you would like to make sure
is included in this years budget please contact the School Board at mailto:schoolboard at k12albemarle.org
.

HENLEY JAZZ BENEFIT CONCERT

Mark your calendars! The Henley Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Choir will be
performing a benefit concert on Friday, April 25, at 7:00 PM in the
Lane Auditorium in the County Office Building. Internationally
renowned jazz musicians Stephanie Nakasian and Hod O'Brien will be
performing the final act of the evening.

All proceeds from this concert will go to the Blue Ridge Area Food
Bank, which supplies food to needy families in our community. More
than 6,200 people in Albemarle County live below the poverty line.
Last year, food bank pantries distributed more than 290,000 pounds of
food to people in need in Albemarle County. Nearly half of those who
come to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network and its pantries are the
working poor.

Concert tickets are available at the door, or at Greenberry's and
Heinz Musitronics for $10 (individual ticket) and $25 (family
ticket). Any additional donations will be welcomed, as all funds
collected will go to our local food bank.

Come out and enjoy an evening of jazz and support a very important
resource for our community!

RISING 6th GRADERS: SUMMER OPPORTUNITY - JOURNEY THROUGH HALLOWED
GROUND

Students are invited to move through history this summer as they hike,
bike, canoe, and pod along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, the
175 mile swath of land from Gettysburg to Monticello. This Extreme
program introduces participants to Where America Happened as they
study the legacy of leadership provided by men and women along the
trail and the decisions they made that shaped our nation. What hung
in the balance as James Madison’s contemporaries deliberated over the
Constitution? What did George Gilmore gain by staying in the south
after the Emancipation Proclamation? Was Clara Barton out of line on
the battlefield? Students answer these and other questions as they
work with expert historians including authors, re-enactors,
cartographers, professors and archaeologists who bring authenticity
and depth to the experience. Throughout the journey, students capture
the stories using video, i-Pods and digital cameras. The photographs,
video clips and sound bites are then spun into an original vodcast
that focuses on the lessons of leadership from each site and how we
can apply those lessons to our contemporary world. For more
information on sites and activities, visit http://
www.hallowedground.org or e-mail mailto:education at jthg.org.
