Two Unique Summer Programs
Journey Through Hallowed Ground Extreme for rising 6th – 8th graders
Students are invited to move through history this summer as they hike, bike,
canoe, and pod along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, the Route 15
corridor in central Virginia boasting innumerable historical treasures.
Their mission is to unlock the stories and lessons of our nation’s history
as they work with expert historians, archaeologists, and national park
guides. Along the path, students will record the trials and triumphs from
the Revolutionary period through the Civil War using state-of-the-art video
iPods and digital cameras to create a vodcast journaling their experiences.
The Journey Through Hallowed Ground will use this video journal, requiring
careful analysis and creative expression by students, as an authentic
promotional tool. Specific sites and activities include, but are not
limited to, biking along the C&O Canal tow path, canoeing the Potomac,
hiking Antietam, digging at Ash Lawn, and sleuthing in the Quaker town of
Waterford. Enrollment limited to 25 students.

Beginning Photography For Rising Ninth Graders
Students are invited to participate in beginning photography, a course
designed to introduce participants to basic camera equipment, developing
procedures and fundamental photography techniques. As students familiarize
themselves with cameras, they will explore how focus, shutter and film speed
impact their work and then proceed to study more complex techniques such as
framing a shot, applying the rule of thirds and using lighting for diverse
effects. Assignments become more open-ended as the course progresses and
require creative focus as they wrestle with the question, “What is an
aesthetically pleasing photograph?” Students will be using 35mm SLR cameras
and may use a personal camera if it has completely manual function.
