Public Forum on High School Program of Studies
A public forum is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 PM in the
Monticello High School Forum. The topic includes proposed changes to the
High School Program of Studies. This is an opportunity to meet with Mr. Don
Vale, the Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology to
learn about these proposals. The specific issues include:
1. GPA – Weighted Grades – Class Rank (Specifically no
“weighting” of grades to determine GPA and eliminating Class Rank)
2. Grading Scale (Changing from a current “7-point scale”
(A=93-100, B=86-92, etc) to a “10-point scale” (A=90-100, B=80-89, etc)
3. Levels in Courses
4. Exams / Exam Options (Use of SOL’s as Final Exam Option)

Burley Games Night
The first Burley Games Night of the year, sponsored by YLI (Youth Leadership
Initiative), will be Friday, December 1st from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the
cafeteria. The fee is $8 for all you can eat pizza, drinks, snacks, and
loads of fun. Students may bring their own games or enjoy the games
provided. This event is open to all Burley students. Parent pickup is in
the bus loop by the cafeteria door. Parents can e-mail Judy Cutright at
jcutright at k12albemarle.org <mailto:jcutright at k12albemarle.org> for more
information.
8th Grade Tour of CATEC
On Friday, December 1, the 8th grade will be visiting CATEC
(Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center). Please avoid
scheduling any appointments for your child on this day so they don’t miss
this opportunity.
Keep Collecting Box Tops
Please remember to keep collecting Box Tops, Tyson A+ Labels and Campbell
Soup Labels!! We have a goal of earning $500 this year from Box Tops (last
year we earned $280). So far we have earned $90, which is a great start.
If every student turned in just one Box Top each month we would easily meet
our goal.
If you do your holiday shopping on the Internet, start at the Box Tops
Marketplace and your purchases will earn money for Burley, too! Start at
the Box Tops Marketplace at www.boxtops4education.com
<http://www.boxtops4education.com/> . Click on the link to one of your
favorite online stores – they have everything from Best Buy to Target and
Lands End to Gap). You’ll be automatically sent to that store’s web site.
Shop as you normally would and a portion of your qualifying purchase is
donated to Burley. In order to ensure that all of your purchases are
credited to your designated school, you must start at the Box Tops
Marketplace <http://www.boxtops4education.com/Marketplace/Default.aspx>
before making a purchase. If you don't start at the Box Tops Marketplace,
Burley will not receive credit for your purchase.
Nationwide Acetaminophen Recall
The FDA alerts public of nationwide acetaminophen recall. Go to the website

Communication and Adaptive Play for Children:
Including Severe Multiple Disabilities and Children on the Autism Spectrum
Presented by Linda J. Burkhart
December 11 -12, 2006 - Sponsored by PREP
Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Memorial Church
717 Rugby Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903
Play is the young child’s most powerful mode for learning. Children use
play to experiment with how the world works—endlessly discovering and
revising those experiments to refine and practice understanding and skills.
Children who face significant physical and multiple challenges as well as
those children on the more severe end of the autism spectrum, often struggle
to access the world of play, interaction and learning. Some of these
children may have very little control of moving their bodies. Others have
difficulty taking in and processing sensory information from their
environment. Many find communication and interaction skills challenging.
This workshop is for parents, teachers, SLPs, OTs, PTs, and other support
personnel.
Linda J. Burkhart is a nationally known pioneer in the field of simplified
technology for children with severe disabilities. She has developed
numerous adapted switches and innovative applications for using these
devices with children. She has had vast experience teaching children with
severe and profound disabilities. She has also taught a preschool “total
augmentative communication classroom” for children who are pre-verbal or
non-verbal. In addition to teaching, she has presented workshops and
conducted programs both nationally and internationally. Linda is the author
of four revered books in the field.
Registration
$195 Early Registration Fee if postmarked by November 17. $215 after
November 17. $150/person for groups of 5 or more. Deadline for
registration is December 1, 2006. No cancellations after this date. Parent
scholarships based on need may be available--please contact Deanna Knoll at
PREP (975-9400) if you are interested.
