PTO Open House
Please mark your calendars for next Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00 PM. We will
be holding a PTO Open House that night in conjunction with the Book Fairs
Parent Night (see below). Please look for a flyer with more information
coming home later this week via backpack mail as well as on the Burley
Bulletin. We hope to see many of you there!!
7th Grade Career EXPO
On October 19 & 20 all 7th Graders in the City of Charlottesville,
Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson County schools have the opportunity
to attend a valuable career awareness activity: the 7th Grade Career EXPO,
being sponsored by the Central Virginia Tech Prep Consortium and hosted by
the University of Virginia. The 7th grade at Burley will attend this
Thursday, October 19 from 9:15 11:40 AM. Please make every effort to have
your child attend this event and avoid scheduling any doctor or dentist
appointments during this time.
To maximize the benefit of this opportunity, here some tips for discussing
this with your children.
The trick to getting more than Nothing as a response is to ask specific
questions.
1. Ask About Career Exhibits:
v What exhibits did you see?
v What careers looked interesting to you?
v What did you learn about a career that you did not know before?
2. Ask About Career Planning:
v What can you do to help plan for a career?
* Volunteer in areas that interest you
* Select school electives that support your career interest
* Talk to people about their career
3. Ask About Skills For Success:
v What are the skills for success?
v Why are these skills important for work and school?
v Share with your child the skills that make you successful in your
job.

Book Fair and PTO Open House Night
Dear Parents,
Our Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for Oct. 18-24. We invite you to our
school to share in this celebration of books and reading. The Fair is open
each day from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in Room 214 (near the office) and is
staffed by parent volunteers. If you can help with the Book Fair, please
contact Cheryl Cottrell at 971-7178 or cottrell834 at adelphia.net
<mailto:cottrell834 at adelphia.net> . Not only does this event help raise
funds to purchase essential classroom and library resources, it encourages
reading among our students.
As students grow older, it is so important to keep books in their lives.
Students who remain readers now are more likely to be lifelong learners.
Readers develop larger vocabularies, a greater knowledge of the world, and
higher academic achievement. In fact, studies indicate that being a reader
is more predictive of success than intelligence, economic background, or
gender.
Our Book Fair provides a wide variety of age-appropriate books specifically
selected to appeal to middle school tastes and interests. Students will
discover books that are fun, entertaining, inspirational, and a resource for
dealing with real-life experiences and emerging emotions. In addition, our
Fair will have bestsellers that adults will find interesting and useful.
A special Family Event will be held on Tues. Oct. 24th from 5:30-7 p.m.
This event is being held in conjunction with the PTO's Open House from
7-8:30 p.m. Come browse and find books for the whole family, especially
selections that can help your child stay connected with reading. At our
Fair, we will also have a Classroom Wish List board on display for anyone
interested in helping our teachers add more books to their classroom library
shelves. Classroom libraries reinforce positive learning environments and
provide all students with greater access to books.
If for some reason you are not able to attend the Fair in person, we
encourage you to discuss the Book Fair with your child to determine what
books he or she may want to add to their personal collection.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Fair !
Sincerely,
Sarah T. Severs

Burley Store Needs Donations
The Burley Store is a great organization that provides free positive
incentives for students who exhibit positive character. When a faculty or
staff member observes a student demonstrating positive character they reward
the student with Burley Bucks. The students can then purchase items from
the store using these bucks. The store also has items which can be
purchased with cash. The cash items are sold in order to provide funds to
purchase the reward items. The store stocks cool locker items like
mirrors, magnets, locker organizers and so on. They also have project
supplies like poster board, colored pencils, pens, stickers, and journals as
well as fun stuff like toys and games.
Currently, the store is not breaking even and needs some help from our
parent community so it can stay up and running. Please consider donating
items to the store like unused gifts you received but never used, office
supplies, toys, games, books, study materials, organizational tools, etc.
You may also donate money to the store so they can purchase reward items.

Lifetouch Studios will be taking student portraits on Friday, October 27th.
The schedule will be as follows:
9:30-9:40 Functional Skills Class
9:45-11:04 Seventh Grade
11:20-12:43 Eighth Grade
1:10-2:30 Sixth Grade
Internet Safety Seminar
Walton Middle School will be hosting an Internet Safety Seminar on
Wednesday, November 1. The Albemarle County Police Department will be
speaking about dangers of Internet use and how to keep your kids safe.
There will be two seminars going on at the same time - one for kids and one
for adults. They will be held in the amphitheater and in the cafeteria at
Walton Middle School at 4217 Red Hill Drive. The seminar will begin at 6:30
p.m. and there will be door prizes and refreshments. We will be giving away
T-shirts, an IPOD Nano and a family photo session.
For more information, contact Sue Martin at 434-293-9337.
Halloween Dance & School Spirit Day
Please note that the dance this Friday is a Halloween dance. Students are
invited to wear costumes to the dance but they must remember to not wear
masks or have costumes or makeup with blood or gore.
This Friday is also Burley School Sprit Day and students are encouraged to
wear Burleys school colors, blue and white. They may also choose to wear
Burley High Schools colors, green and gold.
