Open Lecture on Dyslexia
Girard Sagmiller, author of Dyslexia My Life to speak Thursday, October 4th.
On Thursday, October 4th at 7:00 PM, The Oakland Foundation for Learning
Disabilities and the Curry School of Education of the University of Virginia
will host Girard Sagmiller who will speak to University students, faculty,
and to Oakland parents of learning disabled children and parents from the
community about his life with a learning disability.
In elementary school Girard was diagnosed as mentally retarded by his
teacher and school administrators, who recommended that his family consider
institutionalizing him. In reality he suffered from Dyslexia, which can
affect speech, reading, time perception and can slow learning in some
subjects.
He will speak about the struggles he faced growing up and the negative
perceptions people had of him. He will share how he overcame his dyslexia
and the negative biases of others to go on to achieve a Master's Degree in
Business Administration. Mr. Sagmiller has spoken to educators nationally
and internationally, about his deep personal pain, but also his own creative
techniques and skills used to overcome this disability. He provides his
audiences with insights on how he learned to live successfully as a
dyslexic.
Location:
The lecture and reception will be held at the University of Virginia's Curry
School of Education's auditorium, Ruffner Hall, 405 Emmet St,
Charlottesville, Va.
Time:
7:00 PM, there is no charge.
All are welcome to come hear this inspiring speaker.
