Parent Input Requested on 2007-08 School Calendar
Three options for the 2007-08 academic calendar have been created. The
school division is seeking parent feedback on these options. The three
options are posted on the division website HYPERLINK
"http://www.k12albemarle.org/"www.k12albemarle.org. Click on Review and
Comment on the Proposed 2007-08 Calendar link to see the options and
complete the on-line feedback form. This can be done until 1/26.
County Schools Funding Requests
The school superintendent presented her funding request to the school board
on Wednesday, January 17. This presentation can be viewed at HYPERLINK
"http://www.k12albemarle.org/"www.k12albemarle.org. Please note the School
Boards budget public hearing is scheduled for January 31 at 6 P.M. in Lane
Auditorium at the County Office Building.
Mrs. Howard will be reviewing this funding request on Wednesday, January 31
at 8 AM in the Media Center for any interested parents.
EXPO Night is Approaching Fast!
Please mark your calendar for EXPO Night, February 15 (snow date February
27) from 5:00 8:00 P.M. This is our annual Burley showcase where we show
off all our talents and welcome the families of 4th and 5th graders who will
be coming to Burley.
We will once again have our fabulous Silent Auction. We have set a very
high goal for ourselves this year and need your help. We have no doubt that
with all the combined efforts and expertise of the parents and teachers at
Burley, we will be able to reach our goal. Do you have a special talent and
would be willing to give lessons? Do you work at a local business that
would be willing to donate items or services? Do you know someone with UVA
tickets theyd like to donate? Every item will help. Please contact Susan

Hoops & Jump Rope for Heart
This years Hoops and Jump Rope for Heart is set for Friday, February 16.
The activities will take place all day through the Health/PE classes.
Students interested in participating should pick up a registration form in
the gym. Students and parents at Burley have always done a fantastic job in
supporting the efforts of the American Heart Association. We anticipate yet
another successful year! If you can help with this event please call the
school at 295-5101.
Valentines Dance
There will be a Valentines Dance on Friday, February 16. This will be an
after school dance beginning at 4:30 until 7:00 P.M.. Admission is $3.50.
Students who participate in Hoops or Jump Rope for Heart will be admitted
for $2.50. Food will be sold during the dance.

A High School Map: Negotiating The College Admissions Maze
A Presentation By Allen Freeman (AHS/WAHS Gifted Resource Teacher) February

Mr. Allen Freeman. If your student is considering college after graduating
from high school, you wont want to miss this talk!
WHAT: Allen Freeman (AHS/WAHS Gifted Resource Teacher) will present: A High
School Map: Negotiating The College Admissions Maze. Sponsored by Gateway
Services in collaboration with AHS PTSO.
WHEN: Thursday, February 1, 2007 @ 7:00pm (this will be the AHS February
PTSO Meeting)
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This presentation is applicable to ALL 8th-11th grade
Parents AND Students.
WHERE: AHS Auditorium
WHAT ELSE: Mr. Freeman will present information about what colleges expect
from applicants: high school course selections and grades, PSAT/SAT scores,
letters of recommendation, community service and extracurricular activities.
Reference materials include: a checklist for each grade, college calendars,
and information sheets that provide instructions to parents on how to
negotiate, year-by-year, the College Admissions Maze.

High School Transition Activities for Rising 9th Graders
Albemarle High School:

Middle School Lacrosse League
Due to the growth of lacrosse in Charlottesville/Albemarle, the Boys Middle
School Lacrosse League (BMSLL) will be opening the league up to any male in
5th-8th grade. There will be two divisions:
Midgets: 5th & 6th grade
Juniors: 7th & 8th grade
You can find information about the league and registration information at

now and will end on 2/15/07.
Firm practice schedules and game schedules will be available on the
website. Juniors will practice two afternoons/evenings a week and the
Midgets will practice one afternoon/evening a week.
The BMSLL season will begin with The Nolan Jenkins Memorial Preseason
LaxMania Tournament the weekend of 3/17 & 3/18/07. The games will be played
at several locations around Charlottesville. Teams from outside Virginia
that have registered to participate include; Utah, North Carolina,
Baltimore, Long Island and Pennsylvania.

Free ADHD Workshops
The Albemarle Resource Center is sponsoring a free workshop entitled Getting
a Handle on ADHD: A Survival Guide for Parents. This informative workshop
will be held at the Albemarle Resource Center at 1200 Forest Street in
Charlottesville. Parents of elementary school students should plan to
attend on Thursday, February 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. The session for
parents of middle and high school students will be held on Thursday,

Super Saturday-Financial Aid
If you have a college bound high school student you dont want to miss the
Super Saturday-Financial Aid event being held on Saturday, Feb. 10th, 2007
at Charlottesville High School. "The Basics of Financial Aid" presentations
will be held at 11 AM and 1:30 PM . The entire event will run from 11 AM-4
PM. Financial aid administrators from PVCC and UVA will be available to
answer questions about financial aid and assist in filling out the FAFSA
form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Computers will be available
for completing the FAFSA online. Also, if you haven't already done so,
apply for your FAFSA pin number as soon as possible by going to HYPERLINK

must apply for a Pin number
Please bring the following items to complete the FAFSA online:
* PIN number (see above)
* Social Security number for student and parent
* Driver's license (if available)
* 2006 W-2 forms for student and parents and other records of money
earned in 2006
* 2006 Federal Income tax return for student and parents
* 2006 family's untaxed income records
* Family's current bank statements
* Family's current business and investment mortgage information,
business/farm records, stocks, bonds, and invents
* Alien registration card (if you are not a US citizen)
The early birds get the most worms. Don't wait until you finish taxes to
finish your FAFSA application; amend your application after you file taxes.
