Thank You to Departing Friends
Many thanks to all of our terrific parent volunteers who will be leaving the
Burley community at the end of this school year.  Any attempt at a list
would be incomplete, but you know who you are.  However, a special thank you
goes out to the members of the 8th Grade Dance Committee.  Each year a group
of 8th grade parents takes on the challenge of providing a wonderful,
memorable celebration for their children and does so on a shoestring
budget.  If you are the parent of an 8th grade student, please take the time
to thank the members of this committee, many of whom have spent a great deal
of time (some at significant financial expense, too) to make this evening’s
activities a success.  If you are a member of this committee, then many
thanks from the PTO!
Good luck wherever you are next year!
Field Day Thank You!
What a great Field Day we had this year!  That’s the word from our
students.  This comment was largely due to our parent volunteers, who kept
things moving "calmly" throughout the day.  Thank you to ALL parents and
volunteers who joined us for the day and thanks for the many trips to the
store!!!
A very special thank you to Michelle Bascle and Marge Hobson for helping to
coordinate the day.  Let's do it again real soon.

A big thank you to all parents who helped chaperone on the Civil War field
trip and the Washington Park trip!

2007 Presidential Election
We have a great group of folks who have already signed up to serve on our
PTO next year.  Some parents have agreed to stay on in their positions,
while we have several new folks coming on board (see the article below for
details).  However, we still have a few positions open, most notably the
position of President.
This past year we lost our PTO President when her child moved to a different
school right before the start of the school year.  Unfortunately, no one
stepped forward to fill the position, so the rest of the PTO (Secretary
Jennifer Wagoner, Treasurer Beverly Rakes, Faculty Rep Evelyn Wilson,
Volunteer Coordinator Susan Walker & VP Communications Shelley Payne) picked
up the ball and kept things running.  However, this “President by Committee”
will not be acceptable next year.  Two members of this group will be 8th
grade parents next year (Beverly and Shelley) and need to transition out of
their leadership positions over the next year.  Jennifer will have children
in 3 separate schools next year (enough said!) and although Susan will still
be very active (she’s heading up our EXPO Silent Auction) she won’t be able
to serve as an officer.  What this means is that this group of people who
were willing to do this job because we were in a pinch, will not do so
again – it wasn’t healthy for the PTO members involved (burn-out anyone?) or
for the PTO as an organization.  Finally, it isn’t fair for the parent
community to place this additional burden on folks who already have
significant PTO duties.
This means that one of you (someone who will be at Burley for at least 2
more years) needs to step forward and serve as PTO President!  It is not as
daunting as it sounds, and you will have a group of experienced PTO members
working with you and helping you learn the ropes.  Please contact one of the

Following is a brief description of current open positions:
*         President:  Is the primary liaison between the PTO and the school
and oversees the PTO calendar and meetings.
*         Parent Council Rep:  Serves as Burley’s rep on the Albemarle
County Schools Parent Council.  This group meets monthly and serves as a
communication vehicle between schools and the school division as well as
among county schools.  Parent Council also coordinates Students Make a
Difference Day.
*         VP Fundraising:  Oversees the PTO’s fundraising efforts.  This
position has been vacant for some time, but it would be good to have someone
looking for small but easy fundraising opportunities that aren’t currently
done at the school (e.g., Cici’s Pizza Night)  This position would also help
support our fundraising coordinators.
*         September Magazine Sale Co-Chair:  Need a rising 6th or 7th grade
parent to work with Shelley to learn how to run this vital fundraiser – the
PTO’s primary source of funding!!
*         Box Tops & Campbell’s Soup Labels Coordinator:  This is a great
position for someone who can’t come into school during the day.  Our current
coordinator, Kelly Hiller, is “graduating” from Burley but is very willing
to help whoever takes over this position get started next year.
*         VP-School Community & Social:  Oversees the PTO’s Social and
Community Events.  This position has been open for some time, but it would
be good to have someone who is helping our various event chairs, as well as
looking for other opportunities for the PTO to benefit our school community.
*         Burley Bear Market Craft/Vendor Fair:  We have all the information
you’d need to get this wonderful event back up and running, we just need a
few folks to head up a committee to make it happen.  We would like to run
this event in the fall and include holiday gifts and crafts.
*         EXPO Night Coordinator:  Oversees the various EXPO Night events
(dinner, auction, concert, etc.) to coordinate scheduling and provide
necessary volunteers.  With both Janice and Shelley leaving after next year,
it is very important that someone learns how to run this event before they
are gone!
*         EXPO Night Dinner: Need a rising 6th or 7th grade parent to work
with Janice to learn how to run this event.
*         Picture Day Coordinator:  Schedules volunteers to work School
Picture Day.  A list of potential volunteers will be provided by the
Volunteer Coordinator.
*         Lost & Found Coordinator:  Will set up a schedule for volunteers
to come in to sort and organize our lost and found items on a regular basis
and return items to their rightful owner whenever possible.  A list of
potential volunteers will be provided by the Volunteer Coordinator.
Lost & Found “Pack-Up”
All Lost & Found items will be bagged up and donated to a local charity on
Monday, June 11 beginning at 9:00 AM.  If you can come in and help with this
project it will be greatly appreciated, plus you’ll get to look for any
missing items!  We currently have two folks coming in so several more would
be wonderful and should have us finishing this job in 1-2 hours.  Please
