2007-08 PTO Organizational Meetings
If you are waiting to be asked to get involved in the PTO, here is your
invitation! Sorry, we just cant call all of you personally! :-) You only
need to attend one of these organizational meetings where we will be
planning our activities for the upcoming school year, getting to know new
(and old) parents and re-energizing our PTO. We will be getting together
on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30 PM and again on Wednesday, May 9 at Noon. Both
meetings will be in the Auditorium.
We need lots of parent input and we truly need a great turnout from our
current 6th grade parents and the parents of rising 6th graders! (Right now
our PTO has way more soon-to-be-8th-grade parents than it should!) For more
information please contact Shelley Payne at 984-6862 or HYPER:-(IN:-|

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7 -11. In addition to the Teacher Ice
Cream Social and PTO gifts, we are asking parents to think of ways, big and
small, to say thank you to those that make a world of difference in our
childrens lives every day. A personal note or a small token for a teacher
who has made a difference for your child is always a welcome treat!
:-(ost & Found Update & Thank You!
Many thanks to :-)udy McHale who took on a mountain of :-(ost & Found items
and won! Please go look for that winter coat you havent seen lately, along
with jackets, binders, shoes and the always present Burley gym clothes! All
these items and more are on display in the hallway near the Auditorium
thanks to :-)udys efforts. Bulky coats can be found hanging in the :-(ost
& found closet. Older :-(ost & found items have been placed in marked
boxes, so you may want to check those as well.

Mom EXPO
The first Mom Expo will take place on Saturday May 12th, from 10:00am to
2:00 pm, in the UVa Hospital :-(ink. The Mom Expo is a collaborative project
between OB/Gyn and Albemarle Family.com-our goal for the day is to provide
new moms an opportunity to learn about local resources, businesses and
agencies that support and serve moms, and to celebrate motherhood on
Mother's Day weekend. UVA departments will have health and wellness
information, and local agencies and business that support and serve moms
will exhibit. Some special activities include seated massage sessions from
the Virginia school of Massage, a book sale by UVA book store, and many door
prizes and give a ways. Moms can also attend talks on going back to school
strategies, and family nutrition that goes "beyond the chicken nugget". We
are especially lucky to have local authors :-)ennifer Niesslien and
Stephanie Wilkinson, editors of the national magazine, Brain.Child, talk
about motherhood in the media age. Ms. Niesslein's upcoming book
"Practically Perfect in Every Way", has been named a highly anticipated book
by the Washington Post Book World.
The day will begin with a benefit walk around grounds to raise funds for the
MomCare fund, founded by Albemarle Family.com to support expectant and new
moms with emergency travel and lodging and other support related to their
care. This has been identified as a large gap in services for our most
vulnerable expectant and new moms. Vendors will be donating 15% of their
booth fees towards this as well. For more information call Diane Sampson at

Family Resource Fair
The Blue Ridge Care Connection for Children is sponsoring a free Family
Resource Fair for Children and Youth with Special Needs. The fair will be
held at :-|luge Childrens Rehab Center on Saturday, :-)une 2 from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. For more information: Blue Ridge Care Connection for Children ,

College Bound
College Bound is a college transition program for students with disabilities
who are interested in attending college. College Bound 2007 will be held on
the Virginia Tech campus, :-)une 20-22, 2007. Commonwealth of Virginia high
school juniors, seniors or upcoming college freshmen and their parents are
eligible to attend. College Bounds goal is to provide information and
experiences that will better prepare students for the transition to
post-secondary education.
Participants interact with successful college students with disabilities,
discuss policies and strategies with disability service providers, and are
given hands-on opportunities with assistive technologies. Students
participate in workshops and activities related to leadership,
self-advocacy, assistive technology, college prep, learning styles, study
skills, and team building. For parents, College Bound is an opportunity to
acquire transition information as it uniquely relates to students with
disabilities. It also gives parents the opportunity to network with their
peers and explore aspects of their changing role as the parents of a college
student.
For the second year, we are pleased to extend an invitation to fifteen
middle and high school educators from across Virginia to attend College
Bound, :-)une 20-22, 2007, on the Virginia Tech campus. The Educator Track
is an important part of the College Bound program. We are planning a
dynamic program that will integrate the best parts of College Bound with
sessions that are designed specifically for educators. All participants
will interact with successful college students with disabilities, discuss
policies, strategies, rights and responsibilities with disability service
providers, and be given hands-on opportunities with assistive technologies.
Educators will learn transition strategies and assistive technology
information from experts in the fields of federal law, college accommodation
services, transition resources, and/or from other participants. College
Bound is a collaborative effort of the Virginia Department of Education,
Virginia Tech, New River Community College, Radford University, Virginia
State Outreach and Technical Assistance Center, and Virginia Assistive
Technology System.
