Earthlink to Embarq Change
Just a quick note that I will not delete any earthlink e-mail addresses from
the Burley Bulletin distribution list as many people are choosing to stay
with earthlink.  However, if you did switch to embarq I hope you told me,
but if you didn’t, I guess you won’t get this message! :-) Thank you!
Magazine Sale Wrap-up
A big thank you to everyone who participated in our magazine sale.  Although
we didn’t quite reach our profit goal, we did pass our total sales amount
from last year.  To celebrate our success, we had an amazing group of BMX
stunt riders come to the school this past Tuesday.  They were very
impressive to watch and the students seemed thrilled with their abilities –
everything from spread eagles over their bikes to back flips and :-(OTS and
:-(OTS of air.  We also need to thank Mr. Granger for being a willing (?)
participant by having one of the bikers jump over him.  We also enjoyed
seeing Mr. Shedd “get down” and be jumped over, too.
Although the magazine sale is our one, big fundraiser, we will continue to
raise needed money through low-key (i.e., no prizes or other incentives)
activities -- mainly, grocery store cards and an on-line gift store – look
for more information about both of these efforts soon.
Ms. Pemberton’s Field Trip
Tomorrow, November 2nd, is the date for Ms. Pemberton's Reward Field Trip
for her language arts classes. All students in her classes will be bringing
home a permission slip on Monday, October 29th.
Burley Art Club’s Cici’s Pizza Night
Plan on meeting Ms. Dean and other BAC members for dinner at 6 p.m. on
November 8th at Cici's Pizza.  A portion of the proceeds from Cici's will be
donated to the art club. Please mark your calendar and plan to be there.
6th Grade Social Studies Field Trip
Dear Parents,
The 6th grade social studies team is very excited to announce our field trip
to Pamplin Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in
Petersburg, Virginia. The trip will coincide with our study of the Civil
War.
We will travel to Pamplin Park by school bus on Wednesday, December 5. We
will leave school directly after the announcements and return to Burley at
approximately 5:30 pm. Parents/guardians will be responsible for picking up
their child or arranging alternate transportation. Please be on time. Should
we be significantly delayed in our return, we will contact the school.
The cost of this trip is $16 per student, which includes transportation and
admission. We must receive this payment along with the permission form no
later than November 20. If there are financial considerations, please
contact the Burley Guidance Office at 295-5101.
Your child will need to bring a packed lunch, plus two snacks, and a water
bottle. Small coolers are acceptable, but please remember that what they
bring must fit either on their lap or beneath the school bus seat.
Comfortable walking shoes are required, and students should dress
appropriately for the weather and dress code. Much of the tour is outdoors.
Students may also bring quiet activities for the bus ride. Please do not
bring expensive electronics such as MP3 players, cell phones, PSPs, etc., as
we cannot be held responsible for them.
We also will need adult chaperones to go with us on this trip. The entrance
fee for chaperones is $12, and they will also need to provide their own
lunch. If you are interested, please mark the permission form and we will
contact you as soon as possible.
This is a fabulous hands-on experience, where the students really get to
know and even experience what conditions were like for civilians and
soldiers—both Union and Confederate—during the Civil War.
Please contact us if you have questions, and we thank you in advance for
your support.

Information for Parents re. “The Golden Compass” Book and Movie
Many of you may be aware of the soon-to-be-released movie “The Golden
Compass,” which is based on the first book in a trilogy written by Philip
Pullman.  There is an e-mail message being circulated about the book’s
anti-religious themes.  Basically, this information is true, but you should
determine for yourself if the material is not suitable for your family.  If
you would like more information about this situation, please go to the
following website, HYPERLINK
"http://snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp"http://snopes.com/politics/
religion/compass.asp.  Snopes.com is a terrific resource to help you
determine the accuracy of Internet rumors, hoaxes, etc., so go there before
you send out an e-mail warning to everyone about the hazards of Mr. Clean’s
Magic Erasers (which is false by the way).
Information Re. The Use Of Herbicides and Pesticides In Our Schools
Many thanks to Brian Wheeler for responding to a question I asked about the
use of pesticides in our schools.  The following updates provide information
about the School Board’s current efforts to convert all schools to an
Integrated Pest Management program before the start of the next school year.
October 25, 2007
Announcement by Diane Behrens regarding the use of herbicides and pesticides
in our schools.
The schools are primarily using organic herbicides (e.g., BurnOut II
composed of clove oil, lemon juice and vinegar). Unfortunately, the BurnOut
II is not effective on poison ivy, and we have used Round Up or Crossbow on
poison ivy when complaints have repeatedly been brought to Building
Services.
The current practice is to apply pesticides indoors in the kitchen areas
once a month after school hours. In an effort to reduce the routine
application of pesticides to prevent pests, we want to implement an
Integrated Pest Management Program in all of our schools. It may seem as if
it is simple to just stop using the minimal amount of pesticides that we do
apply, but each building has to first be thoroughly examined on the outside
to minimize physical entries for the pests (caulking, weather strips, etc.).
Control strategies begin with prevention – structural and environmental
modifications that reduce pest access to resources such as food, water, etc.
If a problem is discovered under an integrated pest management (IPM)
program, non-chemical means are first used to remedy the problem. If
non-chemical means are not effective, then the least toxic and most
effective chemical is used. We started a pilot IPM program at Agnor-Hurt in
May 2007. We have a plan in place to convert two schools a month to the IPM
program with all schools converted prior to the beginning of the next school
year. This includes a budget for sealing the building and for training
personnel.
Staff continues to look at whether we can accelerate the conversion to IPM
and whether or not we can reduce the routine applications of pesticides and
still prevent pests in our kitchens as required to operate our Child
Nutrition Services.
Update to School Board from Diane Behrens
September 28, 2007
Currently, Burnout II (composed of clove oil, lemon juice and vinegar) is
used for weed control around Albemarle County Schools. If Building Services
hears repeated complaints regarding poison ivy, then Round Up or Crossbow is
used on the poison ivy because Burnout II is not effective on poison ivy.
Pesticides are only applied indoors in the kitchen areas once a month after
school hours. However, Albemarle County Schools is currently in the process
of changing over to an Integrated Pest Management program. Under this
program initial steps include thoroughly examining the outside of the
building to minimize physical entries for the pests through caulking or
weather strips, etc. The second important step is to educate staff regarding
the Integrated Pest Management program. We are fortunate that Dr. Dini
Miller, an expert from Virginia Tech, will be working with Albemarle County
Schools and training staff at each of our schools in the prevention of
pests. Agnor-Hurt has already been using the Integrated Pest Management
program and each month a new school will be added. The idea is that
pesticides will not be used on a regular basis. If a problem is discovered
under an Integrated Pest Management program, non-chemical means are first
used to remedy the problem. If non-chemical means are not effective, then
the least toxic and most effective chemical is used.

Note From Albemarle SEAC Chairperson:

“If you are a family member of a student with an Individual Education
Program (IEP) in Albemarle County schools, there is a resource you should
know about.  The Albemarle County Special Education Advisory Committee
(SEAC) is comprised of family members of students receiving special
education services.  One of its purposes is to advise the Special Education
Administrative staff and the School Board of unmet needs for students with
IEPs.  SEAC meetings are friendly and open to the public, and public comment
is welcome.  It is a great chance to learn more about special education at
Albemarle County schools and to meet fellow family members of students
receiving services.  Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of most months
except December during the school year, usually in Room 320 of the Albemarle
County Office Building from 7:00-9:00 pm.  Check the SEAC web page at
