8th Grade Make a Difference Day Event
For Make a Difference Day, the 8th grade team has decided to host a 5K
Run/Walk to raise money for Albemarle County Fire and Rescue Squad. Each
student is asked to raise donations for this cause. The event will be held
on November 20, 2007 from 2:00-4:00. We ask that if parents need to pick
students up early on this day that they try to do so before the event
begins.
To kick off the fund raiser, Matt Orlovsky, our ESS-Region Ten
representative & a member of Albemarle's Fire & Rescue Squad will talk to
the students during TAP time to discuss their organization.
We look forward to a highly successful and profitable event!
Bullying Prevention Program Update
The bullying prevention program has been very active in the past few weeks.
In mid-October we had our kick-off assembly with former students Paul
Michel and Mos Rasool speaking on How to Survive Middle School". Paul and
Mos, seniors at Monticello and Albemarle H.S. respectively, are both
exemplary students and athletes. They have been friends ever since they met
at Burley MS and both just won a full scholarship to attend Case Western
Reserve University through their work in National History Day. Paul and Mos
came and spoke on lessons they learned that helped them get through middle
school, including how to handle bullying or the peer pressure to socially
bully others. We were pleased and proud to have such outstanding young men
back in our midst, and the students seemed to connect very well with them.
Prior to the assembly, all students took the School Climate survey, which
has been given for the past six years. This data is very useful in helping
us find concrete ways to improve the school climate in general and with
regards to bullying. For example, this data has led us to focus on social
issues with sixth graders and to suggest that the school put up convex
mirrors in the stairwells to help monitor student traffic. We will get the
results from the current survey back soon, and will be sharing a summary in
a future Burley Bulletin.
The Burley Bullying Prevention Program has been honored by being invited to
showcase itself to representatives from around the state. Julia Weed, the
bullying prevention committee chairperson, presented the program in a
roundtable format at the annual Governor's Office for Substance Abuse
Prevention (GOSAP) conference. This year's conference was entitled
"Bullying and Beyond," and Ms. Weed was one of 2 people presenting from
Albemarle County.
Finally, this is a reminder that we have monthly bullying prevention
committee meetings. If you would like more information about these
meetings, please email Julia Weed at jweed at k12albemarle.org.
Book Sale Wrap Up
Great news! We sold 10% more this year than last at our annual Scholastic
Book Fair. Our profit was $1,083.82! It has been awhile since we have hit
the thousand-dollar mark...Please give a big thank you to Ben and Cheryl
Cottrell for chairing the book fair and for all those parents who donated
their time to come and sell books for us! The Library will be seeing many
new books because of our great profit! Thanks for all you are doing for us

This program is designed for parents of students who attend a school in our

surrounding academic achievement as it affects the African American
community. School administrators will participate primarily as listeners to
welcome the input of parents. Our goal is to strengthen collaboration
between school and home to increase academic success for our students.
We want to know and talk about:
what you understand about the achievement gap
why, do you think, African-American kids are underachieving across the
board
what you think parents and schools should be doing differently
what commitments can be made from parents to have an impact on increasing
student learning
what the schools can do to increase the level of parental involvement

Production of Snow White and the Dwarves
Your kids are invited to perform in Snow White and the Dwarves, which is
being put on by The Jefferson Youth Theater. The rehearsals and shows are
all at Burley, and all school children are invited to participate. All
children will be given roles. There are many speaking roles available,
including a younger, middle and older Show White, eight dwarves,
stepsisters, sword fighting knights, lords and ladies, and forest animals
such as deer, bear, rabbits, chipmunks, etc. The play is a full-scale
90-minute musical version with costumes, sets, songs and dances.
Registration is November 19 and 26 (come the first day you can) at 6 pm at
the Burley cafeteria. Rehearsals are every school day from November 26 -
December 7 (the two weeks after Thanksgiving) at 6 pm., and run 1-2 hours
depending on your child's role. The shows will be on Saturday - Sunday,
December 8 - 9, at 5 pm at the Burley Auditorium.
The Jefferson Youth Theater has worked with over 4,000 children in Central
Virginia and New York. Last July, they performed at the Paramount Theater.
The play is a great deal of fun and an excellent learning experience for the
kids.
The fee to participate is $85 per child. Both full and partial scholarships
are available for Burley kids. Contact Mr. Peter Ryan at 249-2803 or
