Welcome New Burley Bulletin Subscribers
Most of the Burley Bulletin Sign-up sheets have been processed so this is
the first Burley Bulletin for many of you.  However, you may want to check
out the Bulletins that have been sent out so far this year.  The Burley

Volunteer Needed To Represent Burley Middle School On Parent Council!
The Parent Council is a group composed of the PTO's for all the schools in
the district and the administration of the Albemarle County Public School
district. The Council’s mission is to share ideas and information on a wide
range of issues affecting our children.  Burley needs a representative for
this school year.  Time commitment is minimal – about one meeting a month,
typically held on Tuesday’s evenings – but the position is an extremely
important position in ensuring that Burley has a voice on this district wide

October 2nd, so it would be great to have someone in place by then.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on September 26 and October 8 from
4:30 to 7:30 P.M.  Parents of 6th and 7th grade students should call the
school office at 295-5101 to make an appointment.  Parents of 8th grade
students should see below for information on the new open house conference
format.
New Format for 8th Grade Parent-Teacher Conferences
8th grade teachers will be meeting with parents of 8th grade students on a
first come first serve – open house basis on September 26 and October 8.
 Parents of students with the last name beginning with A – M will come
during the 1st 90 minutes (4:30 – 6:00) and last names beginning N – Z
during the 2nd 90 minutes (6:00- 7:30).  No appointments will be required.
:-)ackson P. Burley Middle School Music Ensembles Win National Championship
Awards
The band and choral programs of Jackson P. Burley Middle School were honored
with not one but two “National Grand Champion" trophies this spring from
Music Festivals, Inc., a company specializing in music competitions from
Virginia to California, Toronto to Texas.
The students traveled to Virginia Beach last March to perform and to gage
their abilities against other music ensembles.  The Burley Concert Band,
Mixed Choir, and Women's Choir performed before a live audience that
included professional musicians and clinicians serving as an adjudication
panel.
The students of the music department strive for excellence throughout the
year.  These same ensembles received the highest possible rating of
"superior" at the Virginia Music Educators Association District Band and
Choral Festivals, also in March. The students displayed enormous levels of
commitment and teamwork.  The ensembles require a high standard of
self-discipline, preparation, and attendance at before- and after-school
rehearsals in addition to rehearsal during the school day.
Of all middle and junior high school participants nationwide, Burley stands
alone in having two ensembles achieving top honors.

Fall Fundraiser Coming Soon!
Burley’s annual magazine sale fundraiser will be starting soon, so please
continue to save all of your magazine subscription renewals for us!  This is
the PTO’s major fundraiser and we appreciate everyone’s support to make it
as successful as possible.  In addition to your financial support, we need
volunteers to help in the following areas:
*         Order processing:  We will do this on-line this year, so it should
prove to be much easier and faster than in years past.
*         Prize distribution:  We will again do this during lunch but we
have simplified the prize structure to make this process easier as well. 
If you are interested in helping with this fundraiser, please contact

or 984-6862.  Also, since this is my last time to run this fundraiser, it’s
very important that 1 or 2 folks step forward to learn the ropes this year
so that they can run it next year.
