Last Chance for School Directory
We are putting the finishing touches on our school directory so if you haven
’t turned in your directory form yet please send an e-mail to Jennifer
Wagoner at HYPERLINK
"mailto:gomomyourock at embarqmail.com"gomomyourock at embarqmail.com with the
student’s name, grade, address, phone number and parents’ names.
Lockdown Drill This Friday
This Friday at 10:15 AM we are having a “Lockdown Drill” for the school. The
drill is a standard procedural safeguard to make sure that everyone in the
building knows what to do in the case of an actual emergency lockdown. The
drill will last approximately 15 minutes during which time access to the
school will be restricted.
E-Mail Address Changes
Please remember to update your Burley Bulletin subscription when you change
your e-mail address.  There are quite a few earthlink and adelphia addresses
out there that will stop working in the near future.  If you need to update
your address, please send me an e-mail at HYPERLINK
"mailto:shp33 at embarqmail.com"shp33 at embarqmail.com that includes both your
old and new address and put “change Bulletin address” in the subject line.
Thanks!!
Magazine Sale Fundraiser Kicks Off Tomorrow
The PTO’s sole fundraiser for the year is kicking off tomorrow so please
check your child’s backpack for the sales packet.  This year we have set a
goal to raise at least $10,000 in profits.  This level will allow the PTO to
continue its present funding level for the school.  If every student in the
school sold $50 worth of subscriptions we would easily meet our goal.
However, we realize that not everyone can participate at this level, so
whatever contribution you can make towards our goal is always greatly
appreciated.  We also understand if you would rather not have your child out
“selling” and so donations are always welcome!
Magazine Sale Volunteers
We are still looking for volunteers who can assist with the fundraiser.
Please contact Shelley Payne at 984-6862 or HYPERLINK
"mailto:shp33 at embarqmail.com"shp33 at embarqmail.com if you can help with the
following:
*         Thursday, September 27:  Reach Out Booklets Processing --
beginning at 10:30 AM.
*         Tuesday, October 2:  Reach Out Booklet Prize Delivery – During
lunch we will be giving out the prizes earned from turning in the reach Out
Booklets.
*         October 3:  1st collection day -- beginning at 10:30 AM we will be
processing orders on-line.  Once everyone is up to speed on the new on-line
order system we should be able to finish order processing at home.
*         October 8:  1st prize delivery day -- During lunch we will be
giving out the prizes earned from the 1st collection day.
*         October 9:  2nd collection day:  If all went well on the 1st
collection day, I’m hoping that we can take the orders home and process
them.
*         October 15:  2nd prize delivery day:  Again will be done during
lunch.
*         October 17:  3rd (and final) collection day
*         October 22:  Final prize delivery day during lunch.
Since there will be a learning curve with the on-line system, I’d like to
have the folks who are doing the order processing commit to working all 3
collections.  Hopefully, this will be less of a commitment than it appears
since you will be able to take orders home to work on them.
Skating Field Trip
The health/physical education department is sponsoring a roller skating
field trip to skate town (located in Staunton, Virginia) on Friday, October
12 from 4:00 until 8:15 PM.  Cost of the trip is $5.00 and includes
transportation, skate rental, and a light snack.  This is an opportunity to
have some family fun and show off your skills!  There is a concession stand
on the premises and lots of good music to listen and to skate to.
Participants will leave for skate town at the end of the school day and need
to be picked up from Burley no later than 8:45 PM from Burley.
Parents are welcome to attend.  If you are interested in participating,
please call:  295-5101 and ask for either:

Reminder About Student Drop Off and Pick Up

Dropping Students off in the morning

Bus transportation is available to all Burley students who live in our
school’s district.  It is understood, however, that on occasion parents may
find it necessary to drop their students off at school.  Should the need
arise for students to be dropped off at school please do so no earlier than
8:50 AM.  We are not equipped to monitor students who are dropped off prior
to that time.  Of course, students involved in morning activities that are
sponsored by Burley faculty members can be dropped off prior to 8:50.
When dropping your child off in the morning please be sure to follow all the
safety laws and regulations; parents may be ticketed by the city police for
double parking, blocking the bike lane, parking in the handicapped space,
impeding the flow of traffic or any other routine moving violation.  We want
to be certain all of our students get to school safely.

Picking up students after school

All students must be picked up behind the school building in the parking lot
near the baseball field.  Any students remaining on campus at 4:10 will be
escorted to the front of the building where they will wait for their parents
on Rose Hill Drive.  Students will not be permitted to leave school property
while waiting for their ride and should wait on the steps by the main
office.  Please make every effort to pick-up your student in a timely
manner.
Letter to 8th Grade Parents
Dear 8th Grade Parents,
Please join the 8th grade teachers on Wednesday, September 26, 2007, for
Parent Teacher Conferences.  We will be meeting in the Jackson P. Burley
Media Center.  In an effort to help facilitate the evening’s event, we ask
the following from you:
If your child’s name begins with a letter in the first half of the alphabet
(A – M), please try to attend the conferences between 4:30 and 5:45 pm.
If your child’s name begins with a letter in the second half of the alphabet
(N—Z), please try to attend the conferences between 6:00 and 7:15 pm.
We ask that you attempt to keep the individual teacher conferences to five
minutes in length when possible in order to accommodate as many people as
possible.  We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 26, 2007.
Sincerely,
8th Grade Teaching Team
Shannon Foundation Funds Innovative Learning Projects
Please congratulate two Burley teachers who were selected along with
teachers from five other schools across Albemarle County to receive grants
totaling $7,525 from the Edgar and Eleanor Shannon Foundation for Excellence
in Public Education to fund innovative learning projects at their schools.
Teachers receiving the grant awards include those from Baker-Butler,
Stone-Robinson and Woodbrook Elementary; Burley and Jouett Middle, and
Albemarle High Schools.
The goal of the Shannon Foundation is to supplement public funding for local
school systems. Its supporters, who include a broad-based coalition of local
citizens, share a belief in the importance of dedicated and creative
teachers and a strong commitment to providing those teachers with the funds
they often lack. The Shannon Foundation board reviews proposals without
knowledge of which teacher, school, or system the proposed program will
benefit, and the grants are awarded solely based on competitive criteria
stressing classroom effectiveness and active student participation.
The two Burley school projects to be supported by the Shannon Foundation
grants during the 2007-08 school year are:
Conversation Partners Program – Frances Dovel-Mossis, Burley Middle, Jouett
Middle, Albemarle High
Middle and high school native and near-native English speakers form working
partnerships with their ESOL peers to improve speaking and comprehension
skills and develop cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.
School Mural – Jenny Dean, Burley Middle
Middle school art club members send the big, beautiful message that art
enriches our lives when they create and display a large colorful mural in
their school.
