Ms. Wilson Burley's Golden Apple Award Winner

Congratulations to Mrs. Wilson for being the winner of Burley's Golden Apple
Award for 2008!!  This means she will represent our school and receive a
Golden Apple, as well as gift certificates from local businesses. As a
"Golden Apple" teacher, Ms. Wilson is now eligible to receive a Golden Apple
Grant ($1000). Grants are awarded to eight (8) candidates: 3 elementary, 2
middle, and 2 high school candidates of the public schools in Albemarle
County and Charlottesville City and CATEC, and to 1 candidate from the
schools that are members of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools
(VAIS). The grant award may be used to support the candidate's continued
professional development.

Ms. Dean asked Mrs. Wilson to tell us a little about herself so we could all
know a little more about our winner. Here is what she had to say: 

"I have been teaching for 22 years.  I began my career in Gloucester, VA
teaching 5th grade Language Arts and Social Studies.  For a short time, I
worked at Busch Gardens, but ended up the training manager there.  It was
then I realized how much I missed teaching children.  I then taught 5th
grade in Williamsburg, VA.  For the last 8 years, I have been teaching in
Albemarle County at Burley.  I've taught almost every subject in either 6th
or 7th grade - Keyboarding and World Cultures, Language Arts, Math, and
Science.  But my true love of a topic is Social Studies which I have taught
to Seventh Graders for the last 6 years.  Middle school students are great
to work with- they are fun, curious, opinionated, tolerant, love to
role-play and debate.  Seventh graders energize me with their liveliness and
willingness to explore ideas.  I look forward each day coming to school
because I never know what surprises may occur.  I also learn so much from my
students.  Also, I have been sponsoring the Yearbook for 20 years in all the
schools where I have taught.  I love being involved with it because I feel
like I get to know every student in the school.  I also feel like a
historian adding to the wonderful, full history of Jackson P. Burley School"

Burley Bear Market Next Weekend!

Come Join Us!  The Burley Bear Market Yard Sale is May 10th from 9am to Noon
at Burley Middle School on Rose Hill Drive.

Tables are just $10.00!

Bring your yard sale items and make some extra cash!  All proceeds go to the
Burley Yearbook Fund.
