EXPO Night This Thursday!
Please make plans to attend EXPO Night this Thursday.  Many 6th grade
parents will be coming to watch their students perform, but 7th and 8th
parents will find lots to do, too.  Both 7th and 8th grade teachers will be
on hand to meet with parents and will have student projects on display.  Ms.
Cutright will have information about her many interesting and exciting
opportunities, too.  Plus you don’t want to miss the Silent Auction.  Keep
watching for a list of auction items that will be coming out soon!
Decorations Needed!
Please help us transform the cafeteria into Little Italy!  We need white
Christmas lights and some folks to help put them up as well as any
Italian-themed decorations you might have.  Please contact Shelley Payne at
984-6862 or HYPERLINK "mailto:shp33 at embarqmail.com"shp33 at embarqmail.com if
you can provide decorative items and/or help decorate Thursday afternoon.
Thanks!!
Dinner Reservations
If you haven’t turned in your dinner reservations there is still time.
Please send them in with your student tomorrow (Tuesday).  Thank you!

We can still receive auction items as well.  If you have something please

7th Grade Social Studies Cultural Food Fest
Dear Students and Parents,
Our 7th grade Social Studies classes are currently studying about
immigration in the late 1800’s.   The people who immigrated to our country
during this time helped make us a diverse nation and were instrumental in
creating the American Identity.
On Thursday, February 28th, we are planning to celebrate our ethnic heritage
by participating in a “Cultural Food Fest.”  We would like to have a
smorgasbord of food from many nations.  I am asking students to bring in a
dish that represents their ancestral culture.  In addition, I am also
requiring students to type or print the recipe of the dish.  The recipes
will be compiled into a cookbook.  Before we partake of the dishes, each
student will present their dish and explain where it came from and any other
interesting information about the item.  Students may even wish to dress in
a costume representative of a country from which their ancestors originated.
We will need two or three volunteers to help set up the food during each
class period.  If you are interested in helping, please contact me.
We are excited about this project and looking forward to sharing some of our
heritage that helped make America the great and diverse nation it is today.
Please call me or e-mail me if you have any questions (295-5101 or HYPERLINK

Parent Council School Division Budget Update
Editor’s note:  In case you aren’t aware, our schools are facing one of the
worst budget shortfalls in recent memory.  Please take the time to review
the following information and plan to take action in this budget process.
Our supervisors do listen, so plan to attend the public hearings as well as
sending e-mails and/or letters to them and let them know your opinions!

Last year, Albemarle County changed the real estate tax rate to $0.68 per
$100 assessed, which resulted in school budget cuts (larger class sizes,
etc.).
This year, real estate values have not grown as expected, resulting in more
losses when taking into account inflation, salaries, and health care and
fuel cost increases.
The School Board has developed a budget to provide the world-class education
students need to be successful. Anticipated revenues are $1.3 million less
than the proposed budget, which will result in further reductions of
expenses.
The School Board is considering these CUTS to deal with the revenue
shortfall:
*         Charging to participate in athletic programs
*         Charging for school bus transportation
*         Larger class sizes
*         Reduction of textbook purchasing funds
*         Elimination of electives or under-enrolled classes
*         Elimination of Strings programs
The Parent Council encourages you to participate and share your perspective
in the school division budget process.

message.  If you have any problem receiving this attachment, please contact
me at HYPERLINK "mailto:shp33 at embarqmail.com"shp33 at embarqmail.com and I will
send it to you directly. If you are not familiar with Parent Council, it is
a group comprised of parents representatives from each of the county’s
public schools as well as school division administrators.  The Parent
Council’s mission is to serve as a forum for parents, educators, and school
officials to share ideas and exchange information in order to further
advance the quality of the public education system within Albemarle County.
They have just recently established a website that is full of information of
great importance for parents, especially considering the pending budget
crisis.
