Mandatory Evacuation Letter Issued February 21
February 21, 2008
Dear Burley Parents:
At approximately 1:15 this afternoon, we had a mandatory evacuation due to a
mechanical issue.  As you know, we practice monthly drills (fire drills,
lockdown drills, evacuation drills, etc.) and our students and staff
performed very well during this time.
We coordinated efforts within our school with the local 911 authorities,
building services, and our Central Office staff to ensure that our
evacuation and contingency plan was implemented in an effective and
efficient manner.  As with any evacuation, we had a number of fire trucks
and emergency personnel on standby.  Within an hour, the students reentered
the building to an area that had been cleared by the emergency personnel.
At the time of this letter, emergency personnel and building services staff
are continuing to investigate the cause of the mechanical problem.  We will
continue to closely monitor this situation and work with necessary
authorities to ensure that everything is safe.  We are proud to report that
our students exited and returned in a safe manner during this evacuation.
These situations are why we practice our numerous drills.  We are grateful
that our students and staff showed their exceptional Burley pride to ensure
that this was handled in a safe manner.  If you have any questions, please
feel free to call our office.
Sincerely,
Marcha Howard
Principal
EXPO Thank You!
We had another successful EXPO Night, in large part due to all the hard work
of our parent volunteers, teachers, staff and students.
This is truly a school wide effort with teachers on hand to answer questions
and organize student performances, with students performing or assisting
with a multitude of activities and of course with parents pitching in across
the board, too.
Any list of volunteers is bound to be missing key individuals, so please
e-mail any omissions or errors to HYPERLINK
"mailto:shp33 at embarqmal.com"shp33 at embarqmal.com, but here goes

*         Susan Walker, Sasha Noble, Kim Dunaway, Jennifer Wagoner, and the
rest of the Silent Auction folks -- the quantity and quality of the
donations to our Silent Auction were amazing with fierce bidding on several
popular items and some real steals on others.  Our preliminary estimate is
that we made nearly $4,000, which is truly wonderful! A big thank you to all
who donated items for the auction as well as those who did the actual
bidding and buying!
*         Patti Wilson and her group of bakers extraordinaire for a terrific
assortment of goodies.
*         Jackie Newton and Angie Boyd for collecting all those Spaghetti
Dinner payments.
*         Jayne Rathburn and Jim Jansen who pitched in everywhere but were
especially helpful in transforming the Cafeteria into Little Italy.
*         Bev Rakes, who was also a pinch hitter, plus kept us in cash and
who gets to count up all the checks and money.
*         Mr. Kruger and Ms. Wilson for their excellent announcements to
keep us on track throughout the evening.
*         Ms. Cutright, who wins the award for organizing the most students
into the most activities:  YLI Tour Guides, Robotics Team and Snippets of
Shakespeare.  And of course all the terrific students who participated in
each of these activities.
*         Mr. Jennings and his talented chorus for a stunning performance,
even if it was supposed to be just a rehearsal.
*         Ms. D'Arcangelis and Mr. Barron and all their talented musicians
for the wonderful EXPO concert.
*         Ms. Dean and her talented artists for all their creativity.
*         Mr. Zentgraf and the P.E. Team for working off some excess energy
and calories with the kids.
*         Ms McDade for answering all those crucial questions from our
rising 6th grade parents.
*         Ms. Smith and the cafeteria staff for feeding the multitudes.
*         Mr. Sowell and the custodial staff for setting everything up,
taking everything down and cleaning up all our mess.
*         All of our teachers for being there to meet and greet parents and
students.
*         And last but certainly not least, Ms. Howard and the school staff,
including Ms. Skinner and Ms. Bressan, who do a lot of work in the
background to make everything else run smoothly.

Again, my apologies for leaving anyone out (and I’m sure I did!), so, to
cover myself :-) many thanks to everyone who made my last EXPO Night a truly
rewarding experience!

Shelley Payne
