College & Career Planning Night Tomorrow (Thursday, January 17th)!
We are keeping our finger crossed and hoping that the weather forecast is
better than what is currently called for! As you can see below, we are very
lucky to have such talented presenters coming to our school. In addition to
their presentations, there will be opportunities for parents to discuss
issues one-on-one with these experts. Therefore, please make every effort
to come out and support this event tomorrow night, so that their time and
talent is not wasted.
However, in case of inclement weather we will abide by the following policy:

event. This decision will be announced via this e-mail list and through the
school, as well as on AM1070 WINA.
Following is a detailed schedule for the evening. Please plan to arrive a

EXPO Night Silent Auction Volunteers & Donations
EXPO Night is approaching quickly, February 21st to be exact. This is our
annual Burley showcase where we show off all our talents and welcome the
families of 4th and 5th graders who will be coming to Burley. To make this
a successful event we need the help and support of many Burley families.
Silent Auction Donations
We will once again have our fabulous Silent Auction. We have set a very
high goal for ourselves this year and need your help. We have no doubt that
with all the combined efforts and expertise of the parents and teachers at
Burley, we will be able to reach our goal. Do you have a special talent and
would be willing to give lessons? Do you work at a local business that
would be willing to donate items or services? Do you know someone with UVA
or other event tickets theyd like to donate? Every item will help. Please
contact Susan Walker at HYPERLINK
"mailto:sjpwalker at gmail.com"sjpwalker at gmail.com.
Silent Auction Volunteers
In addition to donations from parents, we also send out letters to
businesses within the community. We need volunteers who can follow up these
letters with phone calls or visits. If you can help with this effort please
contact Susan Walker at HYPERLINK
"mailto:sjpwalker at gmail.com"sjpwalker at gmail.com.
Grade Level Baskets
As in past years we are also collecting items for our grade level baskets
that will be auctioned off. Please send in your items for these baskets by
Wednesday, February 13th.
* 6th Grade Classes Pet Lovers Basket: Possible donation items
would include pet grooming tools, pet treats, pet toys, etc.
* 7th Grade Classes Bath and Body Basket: Possible donation items
would include soaps, lotions, loofa, gourmet teas, etc.
* 8th Grade Classes Movie Night Basket: Possible donation items
would include popcorn, candy, movies, etc.)
AHS School Improvement Committee Volunteer Needed
Heather Stokes, (a Jack Jouett and Albemarle High School Parent) is in
charge of the School Improvement Committee (SIC) at AHS. This is a
committee that was founded last fall by Dr. Matt Haas, AHS principal. It is
comprised of parents from each of AHS's elementary feeder patterns. SIC, in
conjunction with Dr. Haas, assistant principals and some faculty members,
meets monthly primarily to improve the parent/teacher/school relationship at
Albemarle High School. This committee needs a representative from the Stony
Point feeder pattern. Any parent of a child who will go to AHS or who
currently has a child at AHS would be eligible to serve on this committee.
This is a monthly, one-hour time commitment. For more information please
contact Heather Stokes at 975-4837 or HYPERLINK
"mailto:fourstokes at embarqmail.com"fourstokes at embarqmail.com.
Parent Council Update
Parent Council (PC) is comprised of parent representatives from each of the
countys schools along with school division members. This group meets
monthly and its primary purpose is to facilitate communication between the
school division and parents, as well as among county schools. Following is
a brief update on the councils most recent meeting. For more information
about PC please visit their newly constructed web site at HYPERLINK
"http://www.acpsparentcouncil.org/"www.ACPSParentCouncil.org.
The School Board will hold several budget work sessions prior to presenting
their budget request to the Board of Supervisors. There will also be a
public hearing with the School Board on January 29th at 6:30 pm. All of the
budget work sessions (& of course the public hearing) are open to the
public. This will be a difficult and uncertain budget approval process for
our schools. Your input CAN be heard and considered. For instance, the
International Baccalaureate program has been taken out of the budget
proposal again this year, which to many is a disappointment.
You can also access this information online at HYPERLINK
"http://www.k12albemarle.org/board/budget"www.k12albemarle.org/board/budget
Also, the school calendar committee is currently in the process of
developing the 2008-09 school calendar. Please consider any changes you
would like to see, or what you think works as is. There will be an
opportunity for public input on the Albemarle Co. School Board website, but
Parent Council reps. are sending in comments now. This is a quick process,
with calendars being finalized in February.
