Dance Chaperones Needed
We need chaperones for this Friday's dance, February 1st, from 4:15 -7:00
P.M. Mr. Jennings is sponsoring this dance. If you can help please contact
Trish at HYPERLINK "mailto:par75 at embarqmail.com"par75 at embarqmail.com.
School Budget Public Hearing Tonight!
Please plan on attending this very important public hearing on the school
budget. It will be tonight, Tuesday, January 29th, in the Monticello High
School Auditorium, beginning at 6:30 P.M. You may register to speak at the
hearing beginning at 4:30 P.M. in the high school auditorium. During this
hearing, the school board members are looking to the community to give them
feedback about what education initiatives are most important to them,
especially as there will be funding shortfalls this year.
Dr. Moran's proposed budget of $159.2 million is the topic for the public
hearing. Dr. Moran included in her budget presentation at least $800,000 of
unfunded initiatives for the school system. A school system needs growth in
order to continue preparing its students to succeed in the global community.
Please consider speaking in support of education funding during the public
hearing. This years budget process will be very difficult due to the
decrease in state and local revenues. There will be many constituencies
advocating for their interests as our county leaders make these tough
funding decisions, please make sure that our schools are well represented
during this budget process.
Dr. Moran's budget presentation is available for review on the County
Schools Website: HYPERLINK
"http://www.k12albemarle.org/"www.k12albemarle.org. Follow the School Board
link, Budget Information link, Proposed Funding Request link (this
presentation includes the Superintendent's power point budget presentation
to the School Board on December 19th).
EXPO Night Volunteers & Donations
This is the second call for volunteers and donations! Unfortunately
donations are coming in slowly and the volunteers to help with this event
have been non-existent. EXPO Night is quickly approaching, February 21st to
be exact. This is our annual Burley showcase where we show off all our
talents and welcome the families of 4th and 5th graders who will be coming
to Burley. To make this a successful event we need the help and support of
many Burley families.
Silent Auction Donations
We will once again have our fabulous Silent Auction. We have set a very
high goal for ourselves this year and need your help. We have no doubt that
with all the combined efforts and expertise of the parents and teachers at
Burley, we will be able to reach our goal. Do you have a special talent and
would be willing to give lessons? Do you work at a local business that
would be willing to donate items or services? Do you know someone with UVA
or other event tickets theyd like to donate? Every item will help. Please
contact Susan Walker at HYPERLINK
"mailto:sjpwalker at gmail.com"sjpwalker at gmail.com.
Silent Auction Volunteers
In addition to donations from parents, we also send out letters to
businesses within the community. We need volunteers who can follow up these
letters with phone calls or visits. If you can help with this effort please
contact Susan Walker at HYPERLINK
"mailto:sjpwalker at gmail.com"sjpwalker at gmail.com.
EXPO Night Volunteers
We will need volunteers to help out during EXPO night. We will need people
to work in the following areas:
* Spaghetti dinner ticket sales
* Bake Sale staffing the table and donating items
* Silent Auction
* Information Tables

"mailto:jjansen at acm.org"jjansen at acm.org or 295-2585 or Shelley Payne at

Grade Level Baskets
As in past years we are also collecting items for our grade level baskets
that will be auctioned off. Please send in your items for these baskets by
Wednesday, February 13th.

J.P. Burley Sign and Garden Project Award
We are thrilled to announce that Lowes has awarded $4,550 of funding to the
J. P. Burley PTO for a school sign and garden. The funding will improve
communications with the community and provide an education opportunity for
students at J. P. Burley.
The funding will finance a school sign, a small garden area, and plaque
honoring Jackson P. Burley and his worthy goal of quality education for all.
This project is will also be a learning event with the Burley Arts and
Science students taking leadership roles in planning, designing, and
installation. Thanks to Mrs. Dean and Mrs. Weed for being the teacher leads
on this effort!
We thank Lowes for generously supporting this important project. Also,
please take the time to thank our PTO President, Jim Jansen, who not only
found out about Lowes grant program, but also submitted the excellent grant
proposal that resulted in this terrific award.
News From The Art Room
There are many opportunities available for those young Burley artists out
there. Currently information is available for the artinplace.org C2D show as
well as the Reflections Governor's school program. See Ms. Dean's websites
for all the details and links for more information. Last year BAC (Burley
art club) won a prize for the C2D show. So if anyone wants to keep that
tradition alive and submit something in this show please see Ms. Dean!
