Mark Your Calendar for Teen Health Night Next Thursday
Next Thursday evening, March 27 from 5:30 – 8:30, you’ll be able to come to
Burley and hear experts discuss a wide variety of topics of interest to both
teens (and tweens) and their parents.  From Acne to how to have the “Big
Talk” we’ve got you covered.  Plus you’ll get to try some fun healthy
activities like yoga and weightlifting!  We’ll have special treats from
Smoothie King and much more!  Look for more details soon!!
Check Out the Fine Arts Festival
This year we will be showcasing the fine art at Burley Middle School from
March 16 -- 30th at Fashion Square Mall. Mark your calendars and be sure to
come out and see all that will be on display. There will be art from 6,7 &
8th grade including altered books, clay fish and much, much more!
Burley Beautification!
Burley Art Club worked all weekend on March 8th and 9th to create a mural
project for our school.  As you enter the building there is a new fresh,
spring feeling about the contemporary mural design.  Students created 18” x
18” squares and wrote the word “Welcome” in different languages.  Check out
pictures of this effort at

Burley’s Chorus Groups Are Champs!
Congratulations to the Burley Mixed Chorus and to the Burley Bearettes
Women's Chorus, who performed yesterday at the Virginia Music Educators
Association District Choral Festival at Culpeper High School.  Both
ensembles WOWED the judges and their audiences.  Both groups received the
highest rating, "superior" from every member of the judging panel!  This is
the first time in over ten years that this has happened!  Copies of the
judging sheets will be posted outside Mr. Jennings' room, #107, later on
today.  The judges also wanted to recognize the incredible performances of
soloists Emily Gardiner, Taylor Gaines, Carol Dougherty, Kali Gille, and
Alec Beretz.  Thank you to the students, teachers, and staff that
contributed to this effort.  Thank you also to Mrs. Howard for accompanying
the choirs, and to Walee Saadut, for providing percussion accompaniment.
Atlanta Spring Trip Family Information Nights
At 6:30 PM on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25, the Atlanta Spring
Trip staff will hold a family information meeting.  Families should plan to
attend one meeting to get all of the current information for the trip as
well as to review all policies and procedures.  It is imperative that
families are well informed; please make every effort to come to one.  Please
make sure that both the student involved in the trip and a parent attend.
Families that are unable to attend either meeting must make special
arrangements with Mr. Jennings in order to be eligible to travel to Atlanta.
Wanted: Six Sixth Grade Parent Volunteers
We are looking for six parents to accompany our classes to the Paramount
Theater and to lunch on the Downtown Mall afterwards on Tuesday, April 1st.
We will walk from school, leaving at 9:30 and returning to school around
1:30. Please let Barb Pemberton know by calling her at school (295-5101 -
ext. 413) no later than March 24th if you can help. The cost is $5.00 per
parent. Thanks.
Burley 8th Grader Mariel Anderson Wins Spelling Bee
Having already correctly spelled "pinnacle," "derelict," "subsidize,"
"chronology" and "equilateral," eighth-grader Mariel Andersen was only one
word away from winning the 61st annual regional spelling bee. "This is the
championship word," intoned David Larrick, the bee's host. "The word is
'aplomb.'" "May I please have the language of origin?" Andersen asked.
Latin, Larrick replied. "A-P-L-O-M-B?" she ventured. "That's correct,"
Larrick said.
Andersen was the last speller standing at the bee Saturday at Monticello
High School. She was one of 28 contestants from Central Virginia who had won
earlier spelling competitions at their elementary and middle schools. As
this year's top speller, Andersen won an all-expenses-paid trip to
Washington to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 26, as
well as a $100 savings bond, a dictionary, a one-year subscription to
Encyclopedia Britannica Online and gift certificates to Amazon.com, Arby's
and New Dominion Bookshop. Andersen, who attends Burley Middle School in
Albemarle County, won second place in last year's competition. Last year's
champion, Mariel Sullivan, of the Covenant School in Albemarle, was
eliminated Saturday after getting tripped up on "supplicate." In earlier
rounds, Sullivan successfully spelled "dismissal," "spectacles," "tortoni,"
"paprika" and "cantata." Sullivan was eliminated in the second round of last
year's national bee.
After his daughter won the regional bee, Andersen's father, Ed,
congratulated her from the edge of the stage. "Mariel, you are too much
girl," he said. In an interview, Andersen said she was surprised she won, as
she hadn't had much time to prepare. In the week running up to the bee,
Andersen performed in three showings of Macbeth, applied to a Governor's
School art program and sang in a choral concert. "I didn't really practice
for this at all," she said. Andersen's spelling prowess was likely aided by
her passion for books, particularly Jane Austen novels and the "Gossip Girl"
young adult series. She is currently reading "The Great Gatsby."
Saturday's second-place speller was Charlottesville resident Jonah O'Connor,
an eighth-grader at Buford Middle School. O'Connor nailed "didactic,"
"tepid," "temperamental," "apparition," "commiserate" and "acumen," but was
stumped in the final round by "adumbrate." The third-place contestant was
Waynesboro resident Samantha Hart, a fifth-grade student at Westwood Hills
Elementary School. Hart accurately spelled "amenity," "asthma," "salmon,"
"receptacle" and "boysenberry," but was eliminated after misspelling
"providence." The fourth-place winner was Kayla Barker, a seventh-grade
student at William Monroe Middle School in Greene County, who stumbled on
"despicable," but correctly spelled "hysterical," "illuminate," "corridor,"
"vagabond" and "affinity." The Daily Progress, The News Virginian and NBC 29
sponsored the regional spelling bee, as did Better Living Inc., ADC
Services, Evergreen Lawn Care, Arby's at Forest Lakes and New Dominion Book
Shop.

Congratulations to Burley Destination Imagination Winners!
This past Saturday at the Jefferson District Destination Imagination
Regional Competition several Burley students finished on top.  The Burley
students are Lauren Rakes, Lainie Taylor and Katja van Eersel and are
members of the Keswick Independent Team.  Keswick won 1st place in the
secondary (high school) level and received both DaVinci and Renaissance
Awards!
The Renaissance Award recognizes those among us who demonstrate
extraordinary amounts of effort and preparation in their solutions or
outstanding skill in engineering, design or performance.  Keswick
Independent’s water clock was extraordinary and very cleverly used in their
presentation. There was also outstanding skill used in the making of the
shoes for their performance. Both the clock and the shoes showed much effort
by the group.
The DaVinci Award for Outstanding Creativity honors those individuals and
teams who most clearly demonstrate that spirit of adventurous risk in their
solutions - those who most creatively traveled to reach truly new and unique
destinations. The Keswick team injected creativity into every last drop of
the performance - from design of the characters’ costumes as plays on words
to the witty repartee in the courtroom. Each aspect of the performance was
unique - wow!
