We Still Have Some Discount Cards Left

So far we have sold just over 200 discount cards, however, we still have
nearly 100 left. These cards are a great bargain, they will easily pay for
themselves in just 1 or 2 uses. If we sell all 300 we will earn $1,500!
However, we need to pay the vendor for all 300 whether we sell them or not,
so unsold cards will seriously impact our profits for this fundraiser. So
make sure every wallet in your family has a card!

Purchasing is easy, just send $10 for each card in an envelope with your
name on it and we’ll return the envelope with your card(s) inside. We will
have the cards on sale at our upcoming school events and concerts, so look
for them! Remember all you graduating families, these will also make a
great souvenir, too!

The Wave Skills Program (Skate-Boarding) Is Coming To Burley!

The Wave Skills Program is a free Physical Education program, aligned with
National and State Physical Education standards. The purpose of the program
is to inspire students to pursue a lifetime of physical activity. The Wave
Program has visited over 2,500 schools and has taught over 900,000 students
across the United States. The program will be at Burley on May 27. The
students will be skate boarding in a safe, exciting class period while
learning a new skill that teaches coordination and emphasizes core
stability, strength, and balance.

The program will be led by professional instructors from the Wave. Students
will participate in a safe environment abiding by safety rules. Every
participant will wear a helmet with a lice prevention barrier. The “Buddy
System” will be used as a teaching technique.

Students brought home information and permission forms on May 16. While
realizing that many of our students will be on a field trip on May 27, this
date was the only time that the program could be with us during this school
year. We regret that many will miss it, but are pleased that the students
who are here for the day will have an exciting time in PE.

Respectfully,

Burley PE Department

Field Day Volunteers Needed

Can anyone manage ONE more volunteer activity this May??!!! I'm squeezing
out one more: Field Day. Won't you join me?

Field Day this year is Friday, May 30th. For those of you new to Burley, it
is a day of fun activities: blowup jousting, moon bounce; basketball; pie
throwing (at teachers, how cool!); water balloons; dunking booth (again,
gotta love those teacher volunteer dunkees!!); teacher vs. student
basketball and more...lots of snacks and drinks...all on the carnival type
system of buying tickets...but much, much cheaper than the Dogwood
Festival!!

The kids absolutely LOVE this day, but it can't happen without parent
volunteers...we need lots, and I mean L O T S, to help man each activity.
What can you do to help? Call or email me that you can help. Grandparents
and college siblings are very useful as well!! We need people from
9:30-3:00. 2 hour shifts or more. I stay the whole day as the fearless
organizer, and my college daughter (a Burley alumni!) will help. Frankly,
it's just fun to see the kids kick it up! Even if you can't make it, send a
little cash with your child for tickets to fun, fun, FUN! (Any leftover
proceeds will go towards the TRACK fund...Ms. Boyd is ever so close to
getting the track and field of her teaching dreams!)

You can reach me at 293-0604 or michelebascle at embarqmail.com

Thanks, Michele Bascle

Honor Roll Field Trip Volunteers Needed

Can you believe 190 student are eligible for the Honor Roll Trip to Lake
Monticello on May 27?! We will have several faculty chaperones, but we need
parent volunteers to help provide and transport coolers to the Lake,
distribute snacks and drinks, and just enjoy the students by playing,
talking, and/or swimming with them! We will have 420 canned drinks that
will need a cooler as well as 420 bags of snacks. Volunteers will need to
be at the school to load the coolers and ice starting at 9:00 A.M. at the
latest on the 27th. We will leave with the students around 10:45. If you
can help please contact Ms. Cutright at jcutright at k12albemarle.org

Burley French Students Honored!

In March, the French 1 8th grade class took the French National Exam Level
1, known as the Grand Concours. The exam is given on the regional and
national level and consists of 70 questions which include listening
comprehension, reading comprehensions and grammar--all in French. The
results were fantastic! For our Virginia chapter, the entire class scored in
the top 40. Seven students scored in the top 20 and two scored in the top 10
for Level 1. Katja Van Eersel and David Van Cleve, received further merit
for ranking 6th and 7th respectively on the national level. Each was awarded
a bronze medal and a commemorative t-shirt from the Grand Concours! "BRAVO"
to all 8th grade French 1 students for their effort and success!

Tell Albemarle County Officials: Make our Schools and Parks Safe,
Pesticides-Free Zones!

Subject: Make Albemarle Schools and Parks Pesticides-Free Zones!

Dear Honorable Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and School Board,

I am deeply concerned that despite a moratorium on pesticides on school
fields, Albemarle County public schools are still using toxic pesticides
near children and teachers. Premise II (Imidacloprid
<http://www.pesticide.org/imidacloprid.pdf> ) is a neurotoxin banned in
France in 1999 <http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FDAVet2007VolXXIINo3.htm> but used
April 9, 2008 at Agnor-Hurt Elementary on ant trails. Please do not use
neurotoxins, deemed too toxic for another country’s children almost a decade
ago, near our children. A sweep with a broom, caulking entrance holes, boric
acid, and if necessary pesticide baits in tamper-resistant containers, would
solve an ant problem quickly and permanently. Using neurotoxins on ants is
overkill; near children, it’s irresponsible.

Termidor (Fipronil
<http://www.scorecard.org/chemical-profiles/summary.tcl?edf_substance_id=120
068%2d37%2d3> ) was used April 28, 2008 at Red Hill Elementary and
Sutherland MS and again on May 2, 2008 at Murray Elementary School. Termidor
(Fipronil) is a persistent suspected carcinogen and endocrine disruptor that
this study
<http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=retrieve&db=pubmed&list_uids=1
7084830> shows the smallest doses are more toxic than larger ones in
mutating and killing human cells. “Fipronil is a relatively
<http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=retrieve&db=pubmed&list_uids=1
2442503> new insecticide
a precautionary approach may be warranted.
it
would appear unwise to use fipronil-based insecticides without
 human health
monitoring
where use brings it into contact with people.” Please, stop and
use safer <http://www.greenbuilder.com/sourcebook/termite.html>
alternatives.

It is distressing the following pesticides also remain on the pest control
list for schools:

· Suspend SC (Deltamethrin
<http://www.scorecard.org/chemical-profiles/summary.tcl?edf_substance_id=529
18-63-5> ) - a suspected neurotoxic and carcinogenic permethrin that the
Environmental <http://www.epa.gov/teach/chem_summ/pyrethroids_summary.pdf>
Protection Agency reports causes “skin irritation, dizziness, twitching,
potential autoimmune disease and nervous disorders...may also be neurotoxic
during development
and likely to be carcinogenic in humans.”

· Siege Gel (Hydramethylnon
<http://pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC33088> ) - a
recognized developmental toxin, reproductive toxin, and suspected carcinogen
that the EPA classifies as having “serious or irreversible” health effects
in humans including cancer.

Children and teachers deserve to be protected from ants and weeds, but
Albemarle County must be completely certain their efforts to prevent pests
are not linked to life-long disabilities. Mounting
<http://tinyurl.com/yshv8l> evidence links pesticides with
<http://tinyurl.com/36njw3> asthma,
<http://www.beyondpesticides.org/lawn/activist/PorterLearningBehavior.pdf>
learning problems, and <http://www.pesticide.org/hhg/breastcancer.html>
cancer. The Virginia Dept of Education’s latest report shows an astounding
increase in student health problems from just twenty years ago. Today,
almost 1 in every 3 ACPS students suffers from a permanent, life-long health
problem, with asthma being number one. 1 in every 6 students in ACPS’s today
is also enrolled in special education for a developmental, emotional, or
learning problem.

Significant
<http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1694966>
associations between occupation and breast cancer are found
<http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&db=
PubMed&list_uids=12296510> among teachers. The number one health condition
affecting
<http://www.state.nj.us/health/eoh/survweb/wra/documents/wra_cleaning_produc
ts.pdf> janitors is
<http://www.on.lung.ca/Lung-Health/Asthma/Work-Aggravated-and-Occupational-A
sthma.php> asthma. Teachers, staff, parents and students have a
<http://nj.gov/health/eoh/rtkweb/documents/rtkbro.pdf> right to know.
Pesticides also end up in our
<http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/drinkingwater.pdf> drinking water and
waterways. Our Shenandoah River is listed as one of the 10 most endangered
waterways, with reports of
<http://hamptonroads.com/2008/04/fish-die-droves-virginia-scientists-seek-cl
ues> fish kills increasing and scientists continuing to collect samples of
chemicals, including pesticides, from the water.

Please:

1. Adopt a permanent ban on pesticides making Albemarle County Public
Schools, parks and buildings Pesticide-Free Zones. Follow
<http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/press_0426081.html> the
<http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2005/Bills/House/HTML/H1502v5.html> states
and <http://www.livinglawn.org/documents/opm.pdf> local governments using
<http://www.stephentvedten.com/> alternatives to
<http://www.ehhi.org/reports/pestschools/index.shtml> managing pests without
poisons.

2. Reserve pesticides ONLY for a true pest emergency, if a pest endangers
the health of children or teachers.

3. In that case, post signs and send letters to teachers and parents as
recommended by the Virginia Pesticide <http://tinyurl.com/4vlynx> Control
Board. Following the rules will help schools avoid near miss situations,
like at Jack Jouett MS last year, where the neurotoxin Deltamethrin
<http://www.scorecard.org/chemical-profiles/summary.tcl?edf_substance_id=529
18-63-5> was almost applied in the cafeteria less than 2 hours before the
8th Grade dance. Neither the teachers nor the parents or the children, not
even the principal, was aware a pesticide application was about to take
place. The Pesticide Control Board understands proper communication is
essential to avoid dangerous, near miss situations with pesticides and
children.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Your Name
