Game Night at Burley Tonight, Friday November 21
The first game night of the year sponsored by YLI will be held tonight from
4-8 P.M. in the cafeteria. The $8 fee covers a buffet of snacks, pizza,
drinks and an ice cream sundae bar! Board games like chess, Life, Clue, etc
will be offered as well as "TV" games such as Xbox, Wii, Nintendo, etc.
Parents of 8th Graders Going to Monticello High School
The Monticello Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) will hold a
meeting on course recommendations, understanding the process for choosing
course, and teacher recommendations for the 2009 - 2010 school year. This
will be a GREAT time for parents to ask a lot of questions and get answers
before the 9th grade registration starts in January and February 2009. A
Monticello counseling representative will be on hand to explain process and
answer questions. This meeting will be held Tuesday, November 25 at the
Monticello High School Media Center starting at 6:00 P.M.
For questions, contact Karen Collier at 977-6533 or 531-9527 or

Band/Strings Cookie Dough Pick-Up
All cookie dough that was purchased from the Band/Strings fundraiser needs
to be picked up on Thursday, December 4 between 2:30 and 5:30. Students
will be able to carry up to 8 tubs home with them on the bus. Please
arrange alternate transportation if your child has sold more than 8 tubs or
if is not in school that day. You can pull cars up to the band room door
which is located next to the southeast parking lot of the school (just south
of the media center). Due to Albemarle County Policy, Mr. Barron will not
have access to the cafeteria freezer so it is very important that you
arrange for pick-up on the 4th. Burley Middle School cannot be held
responsible for cookie dough that is kept overnight and has spoiled.
Many Ways to Help With Toy Lift 2008
The Toy lift has been held in the Charlottesville area for many years. It
is run with the help of volunteers and benefits families identified by
school guidance counselors as needing help during the holiday season.
Volunteers collect toys, books, and money the week after Thanksgiving, and
the collection week ends with the "Toy Lift" collection day on Dec 5th from
7 am to 8 pm at Fashion Square Mall. This is a festive day where folks drop
off donations to volunteers and local celebrities are "lifted" into the air
by cranes to help promote the event. There are many opportunities for
families and individuals to volunteer including: donating items, sorting
items, separating books by age level, being a Santa or Elf at the site,
etc... It is a great chance to show your kids the true meaning of the
holiday season.
YLI is sponsoring a Book Drive to benefit the Toy Lift. There will be
collection boxes located throughout the school and donations can be dropped
off from Monday, December 1st until the end of school on Friday, Dec 5th.
The books should be new or "almost new", and for any age child. Book Fairs
being held in some schools next week are a great place to find a good deal
on books and support local schools at the same time.
If you would like more information about the Toy Lift, or how you can help
by volunteering your time, or donations, you can check out the web site at
www.kidslift.org <http://www.kidslift.org/> , or contact Jill Farrell at
jhfarrell at yahoo.com. Let's show our community that Burley cares, and fill
up those boxes!
Make A Difference Day @ JP Burley!
Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping
others -- a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. This year in
support of Make a Difference Day, students at JP Burley collected cans of
food to support the Jefferson Area Food Bank. Students and the JP Burley
community donated approximately 1,200 lbs of canned goods the local food
bank. A big thanks to all!

Making Burley Better! - The Chorus Program
One of our many outstanding educational programs at JP Burley is the choir
program. There are a variety of choirs at JP Burley, including the Young
Women's Chorus, the Mixed Ensemble, and the Burley Bearettes, which are 100%
volunteer, auditioned ensembles comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at JP
Burley. There is an active travel and performance schedule this year, with
a performance at the National Mall, a trip to Ohio State to perform at the
university concert hall, a competition in New York City, and local
performances including one at the Omni Hotel on Monday, December 15. For
more about the JP Burley Chorus program, see

JP Burley Top Box and Labels Program
It's time to send in all those Box Tops and Labels you've been collecting
this semester! We will send in this batch over the Thanksgiving holidays so
get them in soon (the collection bin is in the main hallway or send them in
backpack mail). Don't forget to turn in your Campbell labels as well! Set
of a personal goal of clipping at least one Top Box for Education or Labels
for Education coupon per week. At <http://www.boxtops4education.com/>
