Hi, folks,
As we begin this year, I'd like everyone to understand our gifted nomination
process.
ANYONE can nominate a student to be identified as gifted--a parent, a
student, a staff member or a community member. There is a form you fill out
and then the school sends some more forms to the family and I give some to
the teacher to fill out. The forms need to be filled out by certain dates.
We have three cycles for identification--the first cycle ends October 1, and
the next two months are spent testing, observing and evaluating--so families
are notified of a committee decision by December 1.
The second cycle closes for nominations Dec. 1 and families are notified by
March 1. The third cycle closes for nominations March 1 and families are
notified by May 15. If you would like a nomination form, or to discuss
whether you should fill out a form for a specific child, please contact me
to set up a conference so we can talk through the process and any questions
you may have. :-)
Please understand students DO NOT have to be formally identified as gifted
to work with me or be in an accelerated or enrichment group. Teachers
identify student needs based on their classroom assessments and anyone who
needs extension or acceleration should receive it in the classroom or with
me when the teacher and I deem it necessary.
Within the next few weeks, there will be an informational meeting on gifted
services at Crozet Elementary School. Please look for the notice in your
child's Tuesday folder. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Thanks and please feel free to call me whenever you have questions and/or
concerns.
