Are you interested in working with the "Crozet Creatures"? Our menagerie here at Crozet Elementary includes "Spike", the bearded dragon, and fish. This year, the fish tank will be maintained by Glen Bateman of Pet Forum, who will come periodically to clean and maintain the fish tanks (for a fee, of course!) However, if there is any interest from a parent or teacher volunteer, Glen could come less often, and the creatures would get more consistent attention. This volunteer opportunity does require a time commitment, and there would be some training involved. If this is your passion, please consider doing this. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The PTO provides a budget for our menagerie. This year's budget is $1,500. The money goes to maintenance, food, new equipment, and consultant fees (Mr. Bateman.) However, there are money-saving things that we have done in the past to help the animal budget. Some of the ideas include:

*	Children can catch crickets and grasshoppers to supplement Spike's diet (please ensure they are pesticide free.)

*	Bring dog food for the Madagascar Hissing cockroaches (which are food for Spike.)

*	Buy replacement fish

*	Donate funds for equipment the tank needs

*	Volunteer to keep the animals (those that are portable) over holidays and vacations.

If you are interested in helping in anyway, please contact Patty Marbury, PTO President, at 823-6015.

Teachers: If any of you would like to be associated with the program, to answer questions and be somewhat knowledgeable about the Crozet Creatures, and act as their liaison and advocate, please let the PTO know.

It takes time and effort for such a program, but it is worth it for the exposure of the students to the animals and their environments and habitats. Crozet Elementary has one of the best programs of its kind in the whole county!
