Dear Parent:
As happens from time-to-time, our school community experiences a medical illness that begins to spread rather quickly. Currently that illness is a streptococcal infection of the throat, commonly called strep throat. This is a bacterial infection requiring an antibiotic to rid the body of the infection.
Typical symptoms of a strep throat infection are a persistent sore throat and fever, often accompanied by a headache and stomachache. The reports that I am receiving from some of our parents suggest some confusion in symptoms this time around; where, a sore throat is not necessarily persistent nor the prominent symptom, fever comes and goes, or there is no fever at all, and headache and stomachache may be the more prominent complaints.
Be watchful of your child who complains of any of these symptoms, especially if they persistent and you notice her/his activity level and appetite falling off. If you suspect that your child has strep throat, take her/him to the doctor for a throat culture. If your child has strep throat, she/he must be fever free and have taken an antibiotic for twenty-four hours before returning to school, and please notify me at the school.
I know that you have concerns about your children missing too much school, but if your child is indeed sick, please keep her/him home. A body at rest heals the best is what I advocate.
