 OPPORTUNITIES for EXCELLENCE

(in addition to the PTO sponsored art class on Mondays)

As we begin a new calendar year, we will continue with our "already ongoing" clubs that include K-2 Destination Imagination (Jennie Crescimanno), Challenge 24 CLUB (and upcoming competition) (Paula Dunsmore/Barbara Huneycutt), Robotics (Shelby Bowen) and our Drama Club (Dawna McCracken, Barb Stevenson, Barbara Huneycutt). We have many, MANY volunteers involved in these, so if your child is participating, please be sure to thank the sponsor(s) for sharing their time to provide extra opportunities beyond the school day for our students! While each club has an official school sponsor (listed after the club), we couldn't do it without our parent supporters! Many of us have very loyal and faithful folks who attend every meeting, and upon whom we rely heavily. THANK YOU PARENTS!!!

The second semester we will add some new opportunities as well. Mrs. Cherie Witt will again sponsor the running club, which happens once the weather gets a bit warmer. Watch out for that information to come home late February, early March. Ms. Paula White and Mr. Russ Crescimanno will pilot a "Philosophy Club". We will be using Marietta McCarty's Book "Little Big Minds" to help our discussions. Because it IS a pilot, we intend to keep the group small. Thus, we solicited suggestions from teachers in grades 2-3 and added our own to make our list of students who will be invited to participate. Please watch for that note to come home in the Tuesday folder on January 23. We will continue our plans for a second session of the Boomwhackers Club. If you would like to volunteer to help us, please contact Ms. Paula White at <mailto:pwhite at k12albemarle.org> pwhite at k12albemarle.org. The number of children (and which grades we invite to join us) will be dependent upon the number of volunteers we get. Volunteering is easy--we supply all materials and CDs that give explicit instructions. Please consider joining us! That note, too, will come home January 23, with the first class happening in February. (We meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month.)

Ms. Brooke Fawley has a "Special Features" art session on Friday where kids earn the right to be invited thorough their work in class. Right now it is supporting the production of the Drama Club, but will meet until late spring. We are in the beginning stages of organizing a 3-5 DI Club for this spring, with the intention of it possibly competing next year. We have a parent interested in getting it going, and are looking for others to help and support it. If you would like your child to participate and are willing to help, let Ms. Paula White know ASAP.

And, finally, our yearly chess club will once again be sponsored by Mr. Mark Green. However, due to his Assistant Principal role, we are looking for someone to begin the club on time each week (this one only runs for 6 weeks and is due to begin late January) as he may have job responsibilities that keep him from participating some weeks. Please let Mr. Green or Ms. White know if you are interested in helping.

Please let Ms. White know if you have expertise you would like to share in an after-school context. Again, thanks to all of you who help either by being here or behind the scenes. We couldn't offer so many opportunities without you!
