CLINIC UPDATE

 <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Influenza, better known as "flu," has arrived at Crozet School. In an attempt to curtail a wide-spread outbreak, I have information for you and requests of you.

The flu is caused by a virus that attacks the nose, throat, and lungs. It can sometimes lead to pneumonia, ear and sinus problems, dehydration, and worsening of asthma. Symptoms include fever, headache & muscle aches, tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and possibly vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children).

Some people are at greater risk for more serious illness with the flu; two categories that are part of our school community are children with asthma and those who are immune compromised.

The flu will last for 5 to 14 days. If your child has the flu, keep him/her home for a minimum of 5 days, but preferably 7 days, from onset of symptoms; as recommended by the Health Department. I will call you to pick up your child if he/she returns earlier.

The flu is easily passed from person to person through coughing and sneezing. You can also get the flu by touching something with the virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes. This avenue makes an elementary school environment the perfect medium for the spread of flu; and another reason to keep your child home for the prescribed time, and until all symptoms are gone.

If you get the flu, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids like juice and soup, cover your mouth/nose when coughing/sneezing, wash your hands well and often, and STAY HOME. Older adults, very young children, and people with other health problems are at greater risk for a more serious flu illness. If you can't get to soap and water, use a hand sanitizer (with 62% or higher alcohol content). When in a public wash room, use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door. Wash your hands before and after any contact with your mouth, nose & eyes.

Inform me if your child is diagnosed with flu. Thank you for your help.

Martha Bain, School Nurse
