Folks,
Last year was our busiest year ever for afterschool clubs! We had so many
offerings that kids truly needed to pick and choose what they wanted to do!
The various offerings were due to our outstanding crew of parent volunteers!
We are gearing up for another busy year, and need parent volunteers to help
run clubs and supervise them. More details as to times and days will come
home AFTER our Back to School Nights next week and we know what our
volunteer pool is. :-) If you'd like to help with ANY of these, please
contact Paula White, our Gifted Resource Teacher.
Here's what we have so far!
Drama Club--Dawna McCracken and Barb Stevenson are in charge--auditions are
already underway, with the show to be in December.
Robotics club--
Ran one day a week last year, 8 kids, lots of parent support. We need
parents to run this one, then details will be worked out as to time and how
to choose the participants.
Competition possibly in Jan (local, low key) but definite competition in the
spring. Competition is NOT competitive--more like challenges that kids
succeed at or not.
Boomwhackers club--Paula White will be the point person on this club. We're
thinking to do a club for 1/2 during mastery extension 1 day a week and 3-5
afterschool. This runs 6 weeks at a time. Parent volunteers are welcome!
Running club--we need parents to run and organize this one as well. Happens
in the spring, beginning late March.
Chess club--Dana Rivera will sponsor this one, and would love some parents
to help. We typically have two groups--beginning and experienced. No
knowledge of chess is needed to monitor the experienced group--the kids know
the rules. If you love chess and can help out, please let Ms. Rivera know.
The local tournament will be held here in March, so we'd like to have a good
showing of our kids!
Challenge 24--Paula Dunsmore, Barbara Huneycutt and Amy Gore led this last
year, and are willing to do so again. 1 day a week, competition in
March-ish.
Destination Imagination--we have been running a K-2 club and 3-5 club. I
know some parents want to enter the March competition with 3-5 this year.
We need parents for both of these. Coaches need to attend county training.
Environmental Club--Maggie Morris will be spearheading this one. This is a
new club, and she would love parent support.
Global village--Shena Reed and Paula White will be working with some
"invited" 4th graders to create a "global virtual classroom" in cooperation
with some kids from other countries, and some of that will be after school.
It's a pilot this year, and may turn into a full scale club next year. 4th
grade participants are already chosen.
If you have another idea, or would like to spearhead a new offering, please
contact Paula White at 823-4800.
Thanks for all you do to support our school!
