SAMPLE LETTER

To all members of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors:

As parents of school-aged children in Albemarle County, we are writing to encourage you to vote in support of Superintendent Castner's proposed 2004-2005 School budget, which includes a substantial pay raise for Albemarle County teachers. We have been pleased with the performance of the Albemarle County schools, which is only possible with quality teachers, facilities, technology and support staff. We are also embarassed by the low salaries offered by Albemarle County, especially when this area has a wealthy tax base and a cost of living second only to Fairfax. The fact that a starting teacher cannot afford the average rent in Charlottesville, that a 30-year teaching veteran couldn't qualify for the average priced home here, and that city and private schools in the area pay substantially more than Albemarle county does not speak well for our support of education, especially when Albemarle students consistently perform above state and national averages. The compensation is not
commensurate with the achieved results or the standard of living of the area, and we believe Dr. Castner's proposed budget is a step in the right direction to make Albemarle more on par with its peers.

We would also like to urge you NOT to lower the personal property tax rate from $.76 per $100.00 to .74 per 100.00. Albemarle County residents already enjoy a lower tax rate than many localities, and the new rate would rob $1.1 million additional dollars from our already overburdened schools, while only giving the average taxpayer an additional $55 per year. Those pennies per day to homeowners will be barely noticeable, while the schools (and ultimately the students) will surely feel the negative impact of the $1.1 million dollars lost. We urge you to
keep the tax rate at its present level.

We appreciate your service to the community and your willingness to listen to constituents. If education truly is a priority for this area, the board must put its budget allocations behind its rhetoric by maintaining the current tax rate and voting for Dr. Castner's proposed budget for Albemarle County Schools.

     Thank you,
     Gregory and Maury Brown
