 At last night's Albemarle County School Board meeting, several central office staffing changes were approved and announced to the public.  In the media release below, you can see Mr. Bruce Benson has been promoted to the Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning.  Moving into Mr. Benson's current position in central office will be Don Vale, Principal at Henley Middle School who becomes the division's new Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology.  Further, Dr. Luvelle Brown, Principal at Woodbrook Elementary, will move to central office as Executive Director of School and Division Improvement.  Mrs. Bonnie Pendleton has been named the Assistant Director of Assessment and Information Services.  Congratulations to these employees on their new assignments working with Superintendent Pam Moran.  There are no announcements yet as to who will be named our new Principals at Woodbrook and Henley. Brian Wheeler 

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- NEWS RELEASE DATE: May 26, 2006 CONTACT: Dr. Pamela Moran, Superintendent PHONE: (434) 296-5826  Albemarle County School Board Announces Administrative Changes (ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – At its May 25, 2006 meeting, the Albemarle County School Board announced the following administrative changes:

Mr. Bruce Benson has been named the Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning.  Mr. Benson is the current Executive Director for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology for Albemarle County Public Schools.  He brings over twenty-three years experience in education, as a former director, coordinator, adult education supervisor, secondary building level administrator, and teacher in Virginia. Mr. Benson will complete his Doctorate Degree in Education in August 2006.  He currently holds a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education from OldDominionUniversity, and a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from WesternMichiganUniversity.  Mr. Benson is a recent recipient of the Frank Flora Scholarship for Public School Administration, from the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia. His understanding of information,   instructional, and communication technologies, twenty-first century learning expectations, and K-12 curriculum and instruction provides the Division with strong leadership to focus strategic planning actions essential to higher levels of learning for all students.     

Dr. Luvelle Brown has been named the Executive Director of School and Division Improvement.  Dr. Brown is currently Principal of Woodbrook Elementary School.  He was hired into his current position last year.  Previously, Dr. Brown served as Principal of Radcliffe Elementary School in HenricoCounty. He has held Assistant Principalships at WalkerElementary School in Charlottesville and LouisaCountySchools.  He was also a teacher in Fluvanna County Public Schools. He brings an understanding of instructional technology tool uses, assessment applications to inform continuous school improvement, and a clear commitment to elimination of the achievement gap.   

Mr. Don Vale has been named the Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology.  Mr. Vale was named as Principal of Henley Middle School in 1991 after serving as Assistant Principal at AlbemarleHigh School from 1989-1991. Prior to coming to AlbemarleCounty he was an employee of the City of Charlottesville School, serving as an Administrative Coordinator and math teacher.  Mr. Vale earned a BSED in Math Education and M.Ed in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia. He will provide key support to secondary education programming and leadership for implementation of current curricular work to increase rigor and relevance of student learning. 

Mrs. Bonnie Pendleton has been named the Assistant Director of Assessment and Information Services.  Mrs. Pendleton currently is an Assessment Specialist for Albemarle County Public Schools.  She brings over seventeen years of experience in education, as a former principal, assistant principal and teacher in Virginia. Mrs. Pendleton holds a Master’s Degree in Education, concentration of Administration and Supervision, from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Social Sciences with endorsement in secondary education from MaryWashingtonCollege. Through her expertise in implementation of the Virginia Student Assessment Program and use of student achievement data to monitor progress, she will support the Division’s work to achieve Division, feeder pattern and school goals.
