The summary below is information about the 2007-08 Program of Studies issues that are being discussed at the high school level. A number of Henley parents have had questions about the proposed changes. I have included an overview of the process that is underway:
Each year, the Albemarle County High School Program of Studies is reviewed and revised by a committee that includes representatives from each high school. This year, a more extensive steering committee was formed to review the Program of Studies and to resolve issues that had been postponed previously. The committee this year addressed topics such as whether there should be changes in the grading scale, the weighted grade point average, the levels for some courses, mastery learning model, semester exams, and exam exemptions. The committee work is still in progress with recommendations to be posted on the web site within the next week.
The final draft from the committee will be presented to Superintendent Dr. Pamela Moran for her review and recommendations and then will be forwarded to the School Board for their review. The school board will provide opportunity for public input.
Also, an information session open to the community will be held at each of the three high schools. The dates for the sessions will be set after the superintendent reviews recommendations from the committee.
The topics under consideration that could have an impact on middle school students who are taking high school courses (such as Algebra or Geometry) are changes to the grading scale and to the weighted grade point average.
I will forward you additional information about specific dates as they are scheduled. Please give me a call if I can help you or if you have questions. Thank you again.
