Reflections: Governor’s School for Middle School Students Gifted in
the Visual Arts
Call for student applications! Reflections 2008 is an intensive art
program for selected students who love to make art, learn about art,
and be around artists and other students who love art. This year’s
theme is “Pop Art.” Six Henley students will be nominated to submit a
portfolio for consideration; only 12 students will be chosen to
represent Albemarle County. If your child is interested in learning
more about this opportunity, please contact the Art teacher, Ms.
Miller (lmiller at k12albemarle.org), or the Gifted Resource teacher,
Mrs. Merrill (jmerrill at k12albemarle.org).
Important details:
:: Application materials must be submitted to the school by March 12,
2008 for consideration.
:: There is one mandatory orientation date scheduled for May 26, 2008
from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
:: There are two Governor’s School sessions, one of which will be
held from June 16-20 and the other from June 23-27, 2008. Both meet

attend each day.

2007-2008 Christmas Tree Recycling Program
A free program that recycles discarded Christmas Trees into mulch for
the public's use. The County will operate seven sites. The sites will
be open from December 26, 2007 to January 18, 2008. The hours will be
7:00 AM until dark daily. The sites are:
Rivanna Solid Waste Authority Recycling Center on McIntire Road
Crozet Park in Crozet
Greenwood Community Center in Greenwood
Chris Greene Lake Park in Earlysville
Darden Towe Park on Elks Drive
Scottsville Community Center in Scottsville
Walnut Creek Park off Old Lynchburg Road
This program has been in operation since 1988 and has grown to
recycle over 2800 trees that yield over 229 cubic yards of chips.
Combining forces with the "Charlottesville Curb Side Pick Up" the
joint programs collected 4000 trees yielding 327 cubic yards of
chips. Please note this is reducing the impact on our landfill and
helping citizens find a place to dispose of a large and cumbersome
item. The Darden Towe location is less congested and is suited better
for large loads and contract haulers.
The Program requires that decorations, stands and nails be removed.
Please no "yard waste".
Free mulch will be available starting February 1, 2008 at Darden Towe
Park.
Green Team - Henley Grocery Bags
The Henley Green initiative will be selling cotton grocery bags with
the words, "Neither, thank you." on the side, and a Green Hornet
logo. These are $5.00, and the modest amount we make will go to
green projects at school. These will be available by Thursday.
Checks to J.T. Henley, with Green Henley on the Memo line. Lovely as
gifts.
