Dear Henley Middle School Families.
When we have a change in our regular school day schedule, we notify
parents as soon as possible. Today we had a safety incident we want
to inform you about to ensure you have the facts to use when talking
with your family.
Today at approximately 2:50 p.m., a written bomb threat was found and
we evacuated our campus. Students and staff evacuated Henley and
walked to neighboring Brownsville Elementary School. Albemarle
Police Department immediately responded to conduct a search.
Henley students were dismissed for the day at Brownsville. Students
belongings and homework remained at Henley. Students were notified
that they will not have access to these items until tomorrow. We
will send an update to parents tonight through our Emergency
Notification System. We also will post an update on our school
website (http://schoolcenter.k12albemarle.org/education/school/
school.php?sectiondetailid=173&sc_id=1174425524), and on the
Division's School hotline at 296-5886.
Albemarle County Police are working to identify the person who made
the bomb threat. Making a bomb threat is a felony crime. Were the
caller to be an Albemarle county Public Schools student, the division
would pursue its own investigation in parallel to a criminal
investigation. The school division investigation would be conducted
following policies for student discipline and may include
consequences up to expulsion.
I commend our students and staff for taking today's evacuation very
seriously. Students were cooperative and orderly as they left and
returned to campus. Our school extends its appreciation to our
neighbors at Brownsville for welcoming us onto their campus and
providing us with excellent support. Should you have any questions,
please contact the school office at (434) 823-4393.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anne Coughlin
Principal
