Western Albemarle High Principal Named;
Three Administrator Retirements Announced
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) – A principal for Western Albemarle High
School was announced during the Albemarle County School Board’s March
22, 2007 regular meeting. Chris Dyer, who served as Western Albemarle
High’s interim principal for the past nine months, was permanently
appointed to the school’s top leadership position. The retirements of
three long-time administrators also were announced. Keith Hammon,
principal of Baker-Butler Elementary School, Dr. Anne Coughlin,
principal of Henley Middle School, and Russell Jarrett, associate
principal of Monticello High School, will retire in June.
Dyer emerged as the top candidate for the Western Albemarle High
principal position after a four-month formal search that drew a pool
of 30 candidates. In Albemarle County, he has served as an associate
principal at Albemarle High School and the director of community
engagement and strategic planning. Dyer also has experience as a
teacher and administrator in Fairfax County and as a principal in New
York. He entered education after retiring from the United States Army
with the rank of Colonel after 26 years of service. Dyer holds a
bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology from Ohio University, a
master’s of business administration from Florida State University,
and education credentials from Virginia Tech.
“Serving at Western Albemarle High School has been my privilege. Over
the last several months, I have particularly enjoyed getting to know
the tremendous students and families, talented teachers and dedicated
staff, and positive community partners at Western. The strength that
team collaboration brings to a school’s character exists at Western.
The academic and extra-curricular traditions that demonstrate
rigorous pursuit of knowledge through purposeful curriculum are alive
at Western,” Dyer said.
“I appreciate having the opportunity to join a team that is committed
to ensuring each child’s individual needs are met to prepare each
child for a successful life. I look forward to demonstrating shared
leadership, joint decision-making and continuous improvement as the
principal. I thank the School Division’s leadership and community for
trusting in me to serve in this role,” he said.
Hammon’s retirement will conclude 39 years of dedication to children
and learning in Albemarle County. He began his career in education
teaching sixth-grade at McIntire Elementary School. He also taught at
Woodbrook and Hollymead Elementary Schools, and served as an
assistant principal at Hollymead. Hammon also was the Stony Point
Elementary School principal from 1975 to 1987 and served as principal
of Woodbrook from 1987 to 2001. Hammon left Woodbrook in 2001 to lead
the opening of Baker-Butler Elementary School, where he continues as
principal.
Coughlin’s career in education in Albemarle County spans 27 years.
She began teaching English and Reading at Western Albemarle High in
1980. She served as Western Albemarle High assistant principal for
three years and as the school’s principal for a total of 13 years.
Coughlin also held division-level positions including coordinator of
services for new and student teachers; director of summer enrichment
programs, instructional facilitator and secondary education
coordinator, director of student learning, and director of curriculum
development and research. She also has instructed at Longwood,
Radford, the University of Virginia, and at J.S. Reynolds Community
College.
Jarrett will celebrate a 31-year career in education upon retirement.
He joined Albemarle County in 1995 as the principal of Jouett Middle
School. In 2004, he joined the Monticello High School staff as
associate principal.
“The retirements of Keith Hammon, Dr. Anne Coughlin and Russell
Jarrett represent a combined 97 years of teaching, learning and
leading in education. Albemarle County has been fortunate to have
them as members of its team and we appreciate their dedication. They
have been instrumental in building strong schools with outstanding
academic programs, and they have set the bar very high for those who
will follow,” said Dr. Pamela Moran, superintendent.
The school division has begun candidate searches for all three
positions and expects to make appointments to each position by June.
