Event: “Peace by Piece”: Turning learning, into vision, into art,
into action.
Date: May 31, 2007
Time: 4:30 – 7:00 PM
Place: JT Henley Middle School, Crozet, Virginia
Co-sponsors: Marjorie Shepherd and Dexter Jackson
Cost: FREE
Information:
After studying world issues and events through class, and
participating in
a year-long Service/ Citizenship project, students in these 8th Grade
Civics
and Economics classes create artistic renditions of their visions of
a better
world. These visions emerge as quilts, floor cloths, painted
furniture and
other art pieces. These will be displayed and sold at a silent
auction and
crafts sale on Thursday, May 31st, from 4:30 – 7:00.
Money raised goes to global, non-profit action groups selected
by the
students. This year, the money will go to two projects. One is to
furnish the
sewing machines for the new vocational school of the Ford Haitian
Foundation project in Grison-Garde, Haiti. The second organization is
Roots
of Peace, an organization clearing minefields and building schools in
Afghanistan. Our goal is $5,000, which will pay for the sewing
machines in
Haiti, and three classrooms in Afghanistan!
Through Peace by Piece auctions in the past six years, Henley
students
already funded $28,200 in global projects in Peru, Guatemala, Mongolia,
Gabon, and more.
The evening will also feature international food and music.
The public is
invited to attend. There is no admission charge.
