Make a Difference Day
We will be collecting shoes and belts both new and gently used for
the Orphanage and School at Grison-Garde, Haiti http://
www.fordhaitianorphanage.org. Grison-Garde is one of the most
impoverished places in the world. The Orphanage and School were
built in 2002 under the sponsorship of Bob Ford (father of Dr. Ray
Ford). They now have about 20 girls and 32 boys in the orphanage and
another 350 day students in the school, all of whom are poor beyond
belief. The need is greatest for shoes that will fit children 10 to
15 years of age. The best choices are athletic shoes, sandals for
girls, or lace up black or brown shoes (no flip-flops please). The
belts are a big item as many children may have pants but no way to
hold them up! We will have a collection box in the lobby October 22
- October 25. We will make our final collection at the dance on
Thursday, October 25. Any student who brings a donation to the dance
will receive a ticket for a free candy or soda! If you have any
questions please contact Teresa Hashisaki mailto:thashi at comcast.net.
8th Graders Need Volunteer Opportunities
8th grade students are doing 10 hours of "Citizenship" per quarter
this year. Citizenship includes both service hours (clean-ups, help
with elementary school activities, food bank work.... ) and govenment
involvement - meetings, rallies, watching in-depth news, watching
debates.... If any parents know of opportunities - either
educational assemblies, or volunteer opportunities, please email
mailto:mshepherd at k12albemarle.org and
mailto:djackson at k12albemarle.org, and we can get the information to
the kids. They especially like helping at the elementary school
fairs or sports events.
Thank you.
Caught Doing Good
Henley teachers and students will be participating in a caught doing
good program this year. When teachers observe commendable behavior
from a Henley student, they will give them a caught doing good slip.
This slip will be brought to the main office and occasional drawings
will be held for prizes. The prizes will range from free items from
the cafeteria to larger rewards such as concert and sporting event
tickets (we gave away two tickets to the Maroon 5 concert last week
and will be awarding two UVA football tickets today). If you have
any items that you would like to contribute as prizes for the caught
doing good program, please contact me at school
mailto:pmclaughlin at k12albemarle.org.
