GREEN SCHOOL

This year at Henley, “Blue plus orange equal green.” That is to say,
that Henley, home of the blue and orange, is on its way to becoming a
“green” school where students and staff are environmentally aware and
proactive. What’s been happening so far?

-Henley now recycles all paper—we’re turning around copy paper,
newspapers, catalogs, etc. Kudos to our “Green Squads,” groups of
students who are doing the leg work, gathering and packaging up the
papers.

-As part of their life science curriculum, seventh grade students
have determined their ecological footprints and brainstormed ways
that they could reduce the imprint their lifestyles have on the
environment. In addition, many students opted in the "Potpourri"
project to take a more in-depth look at their footprint, identifying
their strengths and weaknesses, and implementing an at-home program
which they documented by keeping a log of the behaviors they changed.

-Seventh and eighth grade students have counted disposable drink
containers thrown away in the cafeteria and are using the data
collected to, not only learn about graphing and percentages, but also
to come up with ideas for reducing/recycling such waste.

-PATSO collected aluminum cans to recycle at the Halloween Dance.

-In November, students will watch Eleventh Hour, an environmental
documentary produced by Leonardo di Caprio. In conjunction with
this event, students will complete a related lesson and we will kick
off our big aluminum recycling program. Stay tuned to Henley Matters
for more about these events.

-We’ll be solving your holiday shopping dilemmas this year when, in
December, interested students will be selling reusable cloth grocery
bags.

Literacy Partners

Henley is looking for parents to volunteer during the STING period to
work as Literacy Partners with students. The Literacy Partners
program will run Monday through Thursday each week from 3:30-4:00 in
the afternoon. As schools are closed next Monday and Tuesday, we will
begin next Wednesday, November 7. Pat Harder will connect parents
with students who need individual support. If you are able to help,
please e-mail Martha Fox at foxden4 at embarqmail.com with the day or
days that you are available. Twenty volunteers are needed. Your
commitment to work with a student who needs help can make a
tremendous difference. Please contact me with questions.

Thank you,
Martha Fox

SCA Canned Food Drive

The SCA sponsors the annual canned food drive beginning Nov 12-16th.
Each Sting classroom will compete in their respective grade for
collecting the most cans. The winning Sting group for each of the
grades will be rewarded with an ice cream party. In 2005, Henley
collected over 5,000 cans for the Food Bank and local families.

Cyber Safety

Check out this great website on Cyber Safety by "Who's Watching
Charlottesville?" (http://www.whoswatchingcharlottesville.org/) The
goal of the "Who's Watching?" campaign is to get residents in the
Charlottesville area to think more about Who is really watching us
online? Many people have never really considered this. There’s a
false sense of security and anonymity on the Internet.

This initiative seeks to educate people so they understand they are
not anonymous when they’re online. The Web is an incredible community
with much to offer, but its many benefits don’t come without risks.

The goal of this campaign is to educate people in techniques they can
use to minimize those risks, so they in turn can educate their loved
ones, and the entire community becomes a safer place.

The "Who's Watching Charlottesville?" initiative is presented by a
diverse group of concerned local organizations in the Charlottesville
- Albemarle area of Virginia.

Emergency Notification System

The Emergency School Notification System (ESNS) helps send automated
messages to cellular or landline phones or e-mail addresses of
parents who signed-up for the service. There was a county wide test
of the system last week. Individual schools will also be able to use
the notification system on a limited basis to notify parents of
specific school events such as parent teacher conferences. If you
would like to sign up please ask the office staff and they will
assist you.

Make a Difference Day

We collected 317 pairs of shoes and 168 belts for the Orphanage and
School at Grison-Garde, Haiti http://www.fordhaitianorphanage.org!!
We will keep collecting shoes and belts until Friday morning. On
Friday afternoon we will be delivering them to Dr. Ray Ford who will
be shipping them to the orphanage.

Thank You to:
Debbie, Alex and Reilly Funk for making the wonderful posters and
delivering the large boxes to collect the shoes.
Mary Dobmeier and her students for such a great job decorating the
collection boxes.
Kevin Murphy and his students for the video announcement.
Sandy Conley and Alissa Layne for taking care of the flyers and
