Destination Imagination Fundraiser

Garage Sale! Bake Sale! Eat and shop! Two Henley Destination
Imagination teams have advanced to the Global Tournament, to be held
in Tennessee next month. The Henley SWITCH Team, comprised of seven
enterprising 7th graders, will be holding a garage/bake sale at
Henley Middle School THIS Saturday, April 19 from 8:30am - 1:00pm. DI
is a team-based problem-solving competition that requires much
dedication and hard work by those who participate. Your support would
be greatly appreciated!

If anyone would like to make a direct donation to the team or if you
have any ideas to help them raise the necessary funds for travel to
the Global Tournament, please contact the team manager, MaryAnn
Schill (mailto:maryannschill at excite.com) (434) 823-5141.

School Board Meeting - Final Budget Decisions

A regular School Board meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17 at
6:30 PM in Lane Auditorium of the Albemarle County Office Building.
The School Board now knows what funds are available for '08-'09 and
will discuss scenarios for possible adoption of a final budget. The
Board of Supervisors adopted a tax rate on April 9, 2008 of $0.71 per
$100 of assessed value. Below you will find a list of items that are
potential reductions and items that could potentially be included in
the '08-'09 Budget. If you have a particular item that you would
like to make sure is included in this years budget please contact the
School Board at mailto:schoolboard at k12albemarle.org.

Potential Reductions:

Eliminate subsidy staffing for underenrolled electives (ex: Strings,
World Languagues)

Eliminate Piedmond Futures payment
Goal I: Prepare All Learners to Succeed in a Global Community and
Global Economy.

Increase Math Specialists FTEs to expand services to all elementary
and middle schools.

Goal II: Eliminate the Achievement Gap.

Nurses – Elementary nurses are 6 hours per day, Health Advisory
Board recommended nurse coverage for the full school day to improve
services to medically at-risk students,

Literacy Specialists – add an additional 0.5FTE to bring Meriwether
Lewis and Murray Elementary Schools to Board-approved standards,

Increase intervention and prevention support including the AVID
specialty center program in the northern feeder pattern, funding to
address 9th grade dropout intervention programming in all high
schools, and differentiated learning and behavior intervention
services in schools with at-risk populations exceeding 40% f/r lunch.

Goal III: Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse cadre of highly
qualified teaching personnel, staff and administrators.

Adjust funding for the Academic Leadership Stipend model to
incorporate market and system-driven needed changes,

Increase funding for Administrative Technical Training to ensure
direct support for classified staff only to improve use of
productivity software and data tools (also Goal V),

Support for leadership development for novice and experienced teacher
and building leaders.

Goal IV: Achieve recognition as a world-class educational system.

Provide support for the Baldrige-based continuous improvement model
in all schools and departments to include training and implementation
funds to begin system-wide implementation of its requirements
including continuation of the online customer survey tool, K12Insight.

Goal V: Establish efficient systems for development, allocation, and
alignment of resources to support the Division’s vision, mission,
and goals.

Increase funding to support administrative and instructional
technology support to teachers and classified staff so that access to
technology tools and training is increased (power supply upgrades,
increased access to laptop computers, SmartBoards, digital probeware,
digital cameras, ipods, personal response systems, etc.),

Increase Office of Technology Staffing - staffing in this area was
recognized by principals as needing improvement to reduce assistance
turn around time,

CEPI study continuation - funding to provide resources to meet CEPI
study items for year 2 and later study such as fleet diversification,
system-wide redistricting, etc. ,

Custodial Supervisors II - Building Services evening shift custodial
supervisors to oversee building use and staff management.

Maintenance of Effort/Cost of Doing Business Increases

Increase Fuel Cost Allocation and the Fuel Contingency Fund: Current
estimates are being evaluated for diesel for next year. Prices have
risen $0.40 over the past month,

System-wide Capital Replacement Funds - establishment of a
substantial capital item/material replacement fund to support student
learning. These funds would be used as needed by application items,
such as kilns, laboratory equipment, musical instruments, library
material updates/replacement, etc. (Reduced in the 2007-08 budget
cycle),

Increase funds to address increasing Materials/Energy costs - based
upon the increasing cost of fuel, delivery of supplies and the
materials are rising faster than anticipated. Additionally it is
likely that energy costs will rise more than currently budgeted,

Increase Board Reserve – rainy day fund to address possible
shortfalls in FY2008-09.

Henley Jazz Concert

Extreme Journey Through Hallowed Ground

Rising sixth through eighth grade students are invited to hike,
bike, canoe and pod with historical experts along the Journey Through
Hallowed Ground, a 175 mile swath of land from Gettysburg, PA to
Charlottesville, VA. This Extreme program introduces participants
to Where America Happened as they study the legacy of leadership
provided by men and women along the trail and the decisions they made
that shaped our nation. What hung in the balance as Thomas Jefferson
labored over the text of the Declaration of Independence? What did
George Gilmore gain by staying in the south after the Emancipation
Proclamation? Was Clara Barton out of line on the battlefield? And
what if John Brown had stalled at Harpers Ferry? Students answer
these and other questions as they work with archaeologists, authors,
cartographers and national park service guides at Antietam,
Gettysburg, Ash Lawn-Highland, Montpelier, Harpers Ferry, C&O Canal
and Point of Rocks.
In addition to exploring significant people and events at
heritage sites, participants create vodcasts using photographs, video
clips and sound bites gathered during their field experiences. This
material along with original music and literary pieces are combined
to create movies that explore the lessons of leadership learned along
this Hallowed Ground.
Visit www.hallowedground.org for more information on the
Extreme Journey. Registration opens March 24th for the Albemarle
Extreme session which runs from July 7 – July 18. Tuition for the
two week experience is $650.00. Interested participants can also e-
mail questions to education at jthg.org or watch the Extreme Video at
www.hallowedground.org/education!
