Peace by Piece

It is almost time for our Peace by Piece event! This is a final event
for 8th grade Civics and Economics classes. Students write an essay
about their ideas for making the world a better place, then they
create crafts pieces - quilts, floorcloths, furniture and more - to
reflect this same theme. These will be sold at a silent auction at
Henley, May 29th, 4:30 - 7. All proceeds go to do just that - help
the world. This time we are supporting The Solar Energy Project -
which teaches women in Central America to make Solar Ovens, and
reduce the need for firewood, and to funding a well in a community
with no well in Haiti, through the Robert Ford Orphanage and School
Project. We have given to this organization a few times, and know
that the money there has a great effect on the people we help. We
have raised $4 - 5,000 in each of the past few years, and have sent
off $32,200.00 since we started in 2001.

All are welcome to this event - and parents of elementary students
are also welcome.

Of course we need all the help we can get to assist 250 students with
crafts projects and pull this all off. So here is my "wish list."

- Your crafts donations - we will have a "family and friends" table,
and welcome the art or crafts of parents, teachers, neighbors...

- A coordinator - someone to organize the list of volunteers - those
who come to the event, and those who want to help in the classroom.

- Volunteers - for the event - signing people up, setup, and cleanup,
and in the classroom, from May 16th to May 29th - in half day blocks.
I especially need people who can supervise sewing, or who are willing
to supervise painting out in the courtyard. Someone to take fliers to
elementary schools and post them at local convenience stores. Someone
to let the media know what's going on.

- Supplies donations - Especially old, small pieces of furniture -
those suitable to be sanded and painted (chairs, small bookcases,
small end tables, children's furniture...) or canvas, cotton
international fabrics, batting, and anything that can be turned into
something interesting.

Thank you! This has been a memorable event for our students, a
worthwhile way to wrap up all the citizenship activities of the year,
and a positive last rite of middle school. We appreciate all the
support of parents and staff. Hope to see you there!

If you can assist please contact Margie Shepherd

Rising 9th Grade Parents

The WAHS volunteer coordinator will be sending out an email in August
asking for 9th grade parent volunteers to assist with 9th grade kick
off events. If you would like to be on the email address list please
contact Debbie Jackson mailto:dsj1950 at aol.com.

March Madness Poetry Competition

The 7th and 8th grade English classes at Henley are participating in
"March Madness for Poetry". Thirty-two poems were selected by the a
selection committee of teachers to enter the championship in a head
to head competition which is modeled after the NCAA basketball
bracket. Students vote for their favorite poem and the winner
advances to the next round. Stay tuned as the competition heats up.
May the best poem win!
