Superintendent's School Closings Message

Friday, January 18, 2008

Dear Albemarle County Families:

Making weather-related decisions regarding school closings and/or
delays prior to the start of a school day can be challenging. Our
buses are on the road as early as 6:10 a.m. This means that in order
for a closing or delay decision to be communicated to bus drivers,
the decision must be made by 5:30 a.m., followed by communication to
parents and media shortly thereafter. Standard procedure includes
staff assessment of road conditions, weather forecasts, and law
enforcement reports.

Our assessment on the morning of 1/17/08 led staff to believe that we
could safely open school, with the area experiencing only light
precipitation through a significant portion of the school day. We
were wrong about timing and amount of precipitation and recognize the
challenges presented to students, parents, and staff. We can - and
will - improve this process. We received suggestions and feedback
throughout the day about our school closing process and appreciate
those of you who have taken the time to share your concerns and your
ideas for improvement.

Sincerely,

Pamela R. Moran
Superintendent of Schools
