2009 Art Trip to Spain

Linda Miller, the art teacher at Henley Middle School is joining
Jenny Dean, the art teacher at Burley Middle School in sponsoring a
spring break 2009 ART trip to Spain. Jenny Dean our group leader has
contacted Explorica Educational Tours and has made all the necessary
plans for next year.

Jenny just came back from a 2008 Explorica Educational Tour to Italy
during spring break with students and teachers from Burley Middle
School. She said, “the trip was amazing and our tour director was
the best.”

The trip itinerary and tour cost is available from:
www.myexplorica.com/dean-1027

"See Spain’s top two cities-Madrid, the political, cultural, and
physical center, and Barelona, the colorful, chaotic, coastal capital
of Catalonia. Visit Madrid’s Prado Museum. People watch at the Busy
Puerta del Sol, the country’s unofficial central plaza. Then on to
Barcelona to stroll Las Ramblas, a tree-lined, mile-long pedestrian
walkway filled with cafes, performers, and vendors selling everything
from birds to fortunes."

8th Grade Dinner Dance Volunteers

Calling all volunteers! We will need at least 20 volunteers who can
help on Friday, May 23, starting at 2:30 PM to set up the decorations
for the dance. (We know some parents may be arriving later because of
work.) Please let Debbie Funk, funks5 at comcast.net know if you will be
able to help during this time. It is always a scramble to get
everything set up. The dance starts at 7:00PM.

Summer FUNd

You can help an underprivileged child attend summer camp by donating
to the Summer FUNd. Studies show that summer enrichment
opportunities help children do better at school, in the home and
community.

Sponsored by Commission on Children and Families, Fiscal Agent
Children, Youth and Family Services

Send checks to: Summer FUNd/CYFS 116 Jefferson St., Charlottesville,
VA 22902

Peace by Piece (New Information)

This is another request for volunteers and donations for Peace by
Piece. This is an 8th grade activity, but we'll take help from anyone
who is willing!

Specifically -

For donations we need:
  - Latex paint - white or light color - for base paints for
furniture or floorcloth projects (half gallons - ends - as long as it
is not oil-basedpaint.)
  - Corks - a girl is making a bulletin board out of these.
  - Old furniture - small pieces - chairs, small bookcases, end
tables, children's tables

For help:
  - I need anyone who can come in for half a day between May 16th and
May 29th.
  - One publicity person to make a few phone calls and drop off
fliers at elementary schools
  - About a dozen people to help on the night of May 29th, 4:30 - 7 -
for about 1 - 2 hours each.

If any of you are crafts people or artisans - we would love donations
of a piece of artwork for our "family and friends" table.

Please mark that night on your calendars - May 29th, 4:30 - 7, a
silent auction of student work plus the art/ crafts pieces of
"friends and family". It will be a great event. Proceeds go to build
a well in Haiti, through Dr. Ray Ford's organization, plus helping
women build Solar Ovens in Central America through the Central
American Solar Energy Project.

Thank you all! Margie Shepherd

If you can assist please contact Margie Shepherd

Host Exchange Student

Teenagers from France and Spain come to stay with American families
for usually 4 weeks in June and July. This summer there is also one
German boy age 18. Again this summer we have a "Homeschool tutorial"
which 6 of the Spanish students have chosen.

Please consider welcoming one of these kids into your family or
passing on the information to your friends and neighbors. Below are
attachments with an application and information sheet. It is a
rewarding experience that is both fun and educational for both your
family and the student.

The dates are:
French group EV1 - June 8 - July 8
Spanish Group US1/7 - June 24 - July 22
French Group EV2 - July 1 - July 26
The German student's dates have not been set yet. He would like to
stay 6 weeks.

Please contact me if you are interested. I have dossiers on all the
kids electronically.
