Skipping, Sliding and Running All a Part of MLS Fun Run ’06
The rain began to fall in earnest around 3:00 pm. The MLS Fun Run was to start on the track at 4:00 pm. Never in the twelve-year history of the Fun Run has rain set in to stay the way it did on Sunday, May 7th. Race organizers Mark Lorenzoni and Dan Dunsmore as well as pe teacher Scott Williams put their heads together and realized the rain had presented the participants an opportunity for a different kind of running fun in the MLS gym.

Children and their parents would still run relays in the categories of K-1st, 2nd-3rd and 4th-5th. The one preschooler paired up with a parent and joined the K-1st group. The older/sibling category became a delightful and slightly different category involving many different pairings.

Whereas past Fun Runs have been once around the track for the child and the parent, the gym offered the runners an opportunity to do more than just run. The children skipped the first leg of the race the length of the gym and back, and the parents then skipped the same distance. Children are natural skippers, of course, but the parents in many cases had to jog old memories. The result was very entertaining for the spectators. And then the second leg of the race came. This time the children shuffled their feet in a sliding motion while covering the distance of the gym and back. Parents once again had to do a quick memory check in order to mimic their children’s motions. By this point in each race, the laughter among the spectators was drowning out the sound of the rain drops on the gym roof. Each race ended with the children running the length of the gym and back twice and their parents then doing the same. Everyone agreed that the relay format in the gym was a
challenging and very enjoyable alternative to the once-around-the-track format of past years.

After the races were complete, Mark presented awards in various categories while participants enjoyed ice cream compliments of the PTO.

Congratulations to 3rd grader Tilden Lexa, whose design is on this year’s Fun Run t-shirt. Dan would like to thank Mark for being flexible as he put together his twelfth Fun Run. Dan also wants to thank volunteers Beth Cottone, Mary Anne Grant, Lisa Brown, Alice and Dan Wiggins, Chris Norris, David Paulson and Connie, Joe and Sam Masri for their help before, during and after the races. Thank you’s are in order as well to assistant-principal Jeannette Orrock and Scott for giving up their Sunday afternoons to help. And a very special thank you to all the participants who graciously accepted the different format and made the best of a soggy afternoon.

MLS Night of Excellence Expo & Family Picnic - Thursday, May 25, 6 p.m. at MLS

Mark your calendars! There will be a Night of Excellence Expo and Family Picnic on Thursday, May 25th, at 6:00pm, at MLS. From 6:00pm-6:30pm, the students (K-5) will present two projects that highlight their work at school in a wide range of academic subjects. These projects have been specially selected by the students and their teachers to represent the work they are most proud of for the year.

Following the Expo, there will be a picnic on the soccer field. Families
are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, spread a blanket and catch up with MLS friends about what's in store for summertime.

Let's make the Expo and Picnic a terrific end of the year event and a new Meriwether Lewis tradition!
