      Dear Parents,

At the PTO meeting tonight, Andy Grider and Teresa Hashisaki did a lengthy presentation about the latest school board budget and why every parent needs to be at the Board of Supervisors Meeting on March 8th. We will send out more info on the exact time and location.

Your presence at this meeting will make a difference. If you attend no other meeting this year, this is the one to attend. Important facts:

o According to Teresa, only 28% of households in Albemarle County have school aged children. As Charlottesville becomes more of a retirement community, we can not assume that everyone in attendance supports strong public schools.

o The School Board is requesting from the Board of Supervisors $500,000 more than is currently budgeted. When the Supervisors decide whether or not to give more money to the fire department e.g. or schools, we need to be strongly represented.

o The budget request includes an increase in teaching assistant hours from 1.5 hours per 20 K-1 students to 4 hours per 20 K-1students. This will have an immediate and positive impact on all grade levels as the K-1 students get more TAs and principals gain flexibility to reallocate existing staff.

o The budget includes among other items, an increase in teacher salaries. Anyone living in Albemarle County knows how important this is.

Come, come to this meeting. Even if you don't care to speak, your presence is important. At this meeting, headcount matters!

    Thank you. Susan Weiner
